Sept. 6 Belief that the house would accept the senate's most Import ant change in the revenue bill an amendment lowering per sonal income tax exemptions was expressed today by Chair man George (D-Ga.) of the sen ate finance committee. George said his information was that many members of the house ways and means commit tee had regarded the amend ment favorably when the rev- enue bill was before them. "At that time," he added, "the treas ury was not so strong for it." Later, President Roosevelt aVrecommended a broader income tax base and the senate ap proved an amendment cutting personal exemptions from S2, 000 to $1,500 for married per sons and from $800 to S7S0 for aingle persons. The treasury es timated the change would pour an extra $303,000,000 into the federal till and require an ad ditional 4,911,000 persons to file ' 1 income tax returns. The $3,583,900,000 revenue measure, passed after three days of debate by the senate yester day, will be considered by a joint senate house conference committee next Wednesday. George predicted that an agree ment would be reached in two or three days. George said the senate changes likely to cause the most controversy were those knock ing out a special 10 per cent tax on corporation profits and in creasing surtaxes on corporation incomes. CAR THIEF AIDS E Minneapolis, Sept. 6 R. H. Mead reported his car stolen but he soon had it back from the police, and gladly. Officer Earl Brunskill, search ing the car for clues to the thief, came across a worn traf fic tag. Further inspection de veloped that Mead was just the man the police were looking for. There were nine warrants out for him for traffic violations. After he put up $90, he got his car back. Costly Crime Portland, Sept. 6". (JP) red Tal Judge James A. Fee sen tenced Wendell J. (JP) Seven men, two of them fair ly well known boxers, were brought into court today for preliminary hearing of charges that they attacked and raped a prominent 36-year-old Salinas mother. Deputy District Attorney Louis C. Moore said the case he would present to Justice of the Peace Louis C. Moore included the allegations that the seven ab ducted the woman and held her captive five hours. He said fur ther charges might be filed later. Bail for each man was set at $10,000.
