EDITORIAL SAYS SECY. KNOX IS Seattle, Sept 8. HP) Ths Seattle Post-I ntelllgencer charged in an editorial today that the navy g popularity wltn newspapermen has "diminished dangerously" as the result of Secretary of the Navy Knox1 woefully misguided orders af fecting the press." The editorial was prompted by an incident that occurred Thursday on the arrival of a Russian military air mission when newsmen and photograph ers were halted by navy revol ver shots after they had sailed their press boats within the re stricted area of the naval air station. The editorial said in part: "The firing upon American newspapermen by United States navy men at Sand Point Is about the last straw. "It culminates long series of incidents of officiousness, stupid regulations and a lack of cooperation which would seem to indicate that the United States navy, in our knowledge at least, is trying to deliberately alienate the Amer ican press. . . . "There have been other Inci dents which are equally vexing. At least half of the 800,000 peo ple arouna Seattle are wholly aware of certain facta which the United States, in concert wltn the British admiralty, has ask ed the newspapers to withhold from their readers. "The Post-Intellicencer under this mandate has cooperated fully but the situation has not improved navy-press relations. "The public relations of the navy until Frank Knox became its secretary were the highest of any branch of military serv ice or of any department of the government and that is saying a great deal. l,'!,.., ma. "The war department, on tha other hand, under the able ad ministration of Mr. Stlmjon, has built Us press relations to an admirable degree. There Is full est respect and cooperation be tween local army official and the press. ... "It li Ironical that Mr. Knox, a newspaperman, should thus betray the American navy and tha American press."
