Townsend Meeting Phoenix vTownsend club will meet at 8 p. m. tomorrow in the Phoe nix Christian church. Important business is to be transacted, officers said in urging all mem bers to be present. Appointed Captain William Groen has been appointed flight and dispatch supervisor for United Air Lines in Oregon, Washington and British Colum bia, Max C. Henne, manager here said yesterday he had been notified by Seely V. Hall, vice president in charge of western operations. Stationed in Port land, Capt. Groen will make periodic visits to Medford, Mr. Henne stated. Capt. Groen has been flying for United since 1931. From Iowa Mr. and Mrs Howard Dinwiddie and their son and daughter are visiting in :he Rogue valley. From Onawa, Iowa, they are on a vacation tour and plan to continue from here to southern California. They are house guests at the home of Mr. Dinwiddie s sister, Mrs. W. W. Hittlc, of Gold Hill. The visitors were guests Satur day afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Stennett of 329 South Riverside avenue. Mr. Dinwiddie and Mr. Stennett are cousins. ' They had not seen each other in 49 years. Minor Accidents John E. Prentice of 517 Newtown street and Larry D. Bradley of 408 Boardman street drove cars in volved in a slight mishap at loth and Orange streets Satur day evening, a report on file said today. Cars operated by Frank Hayner of S2S Boardman V street and Roger Barker of 608 West Jackson boulevard were involved in a minor mishap at Bartlett and Fourth streets Sat urday night, according to a re port on file today. Charles E. Hater, Jr., of 216 East Main street and Mrs. Roy B. Martin of Route 1 drove cars that col lided with minor damage at Laurel and West Main streets Saturday afternoon, report on file said today. Coch ran chief federal probation of ficer for Oregon, transacted official business here over the week-end. He arrived by car Saturday from the coast and left yesterday for the north. Return From Park Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Nitrel returned to their home, 727 Palm street, by motor yesterday after spend ing the past three months at Glacier national park where Mr. Nitzel has been employed as ranger in the Many Glaciers region of the park. Mr. Nitrel will resume his regular duties at Oakgrove school September 8. Grass Fire A grass fire late yesterday afternoon on the Cop co lot on South Fir street was caught Just in time to prevent its spread to a pile of power poles stored in the area. The grass was Ignited by a fire an itinerant had set on the South Pacific right of way to cook his supper, firemen said. The fire department's chemical crew put the blaze out. Stamp Foods Foods available this month for purchase with blue stamps in the government's food stamp plan will be the same as during August. The list is composed of fresh pears, plums, prunes, apples, oranges and peaches, fresh vegetables, including potatoes, cornmeal, shell eggs, raisins, dried prunes, hominy (corn) grits, dry edible beans, wheat flour, enriched wheat flour, self-raising flour, enriched self-raising flour and whole wheat graham flour. After today no more blue credit slips will be redeemed by butch ers for pork products, it was announced by the Portland of fice of the surplus marketing administration. Plane Passengers Mrs. B. Cleff left for Seattle by United Mainliner early this morning. Leaving early last night were Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Baltman to San Francisco, and B. Laun- dry and W. Hicks, to Los An geles. M. Reddy arrived from Portland last evening. Leaving for Oakland, Cal., were W. Mordy and C. Lane. T. Luelitz arrived from Los Angeles early last night. Leaving were D. Santry and E. Thys, to Portland, and R. Carlson, to Seattle. B. Carlson arrived from Oakland yesterday afternoon. Mrs. C. Behnke departed for Seattle on the same plane. Obituary George Edward Higglns Funeral services were being arranged by Perl's today for George Edward Higglns, 24. who died in San Diego, Cal., Satur day of Injuries suffered In a motorcycle accident. Mr. Higglns was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Higgins of Route 4. He was serving with the U. S. navy in San Diego at the time of his death. He en listed in the navy March 8. 1936, and was a seaman first class. Mr. Higgins was born Decem ber 23. 1917, at Bend. He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Robert and James of Medford. and a sister, Mrs, Frankie Nelson of Route 4. Time of the funeral services was to be announced when ar rangements were completed. Vichy, Unoccupied France, Sept. 1. (P) Vice Premier Jean Darlan, In his capacity as navy minister, shook up the French naval high command to day, removing his longtime col laborator. Admiral Leluc, as commander-in-chief. In his place he named Rear Admiral Auphan, the youngest admiral in the navy, and ap pointed him also as director of the naval ministry secretariat, There was no explanation of the change in political circles where Leluc had been known in the past as Darlan's right hand man. Leluc, who flew to a meeting! place behind the German lines to receive Adolf Hitler's peace terms in June. 1941, recently was named a counsellor of state. Auphan is widely regarded as on of the brightest young of ficers in the French navy. Be fore he was given his new, com bined lob he was charged by Darlan with reorganizing the war-depleted French merchant marine. by Betty Shoemaler Medford To Be Site of Next Patriotic Meet Medford will entertain mem bers of the Soldiers and Sailors of the Civil War next year ac cording to Mrs. Margarite Wing- field, president of the local tent of Daughters of the Union Vet erans. Selection was made Fri day at the annual reunion held at Lithia park in Ashland. May or T. S. Riley of Ashland wel comed the patriotic orders o the city. Although no Civil War veter ans were present their descend ants, the W.R.C., the Sons and Daughters of the Union Veter ans, Spanish War veterans and World War veterans and their auxiliaries took place. An impressive memorial serv ice was conducted by Mrs. Elva Lough of Medford. Mrs. Wing field gave two readings and Dr. H. S. Reichard, representing the Sons of Union Veterans gave a talk. Mrs. Viola Wilken of the Grants Pass WRC gave a read ing and Mrs. M. Tucker of this city read "Wedding of General George Washington and Martha Curtis." A patriotic song was presented by V. T. Miller of Ash land. After regular business was conducted the group concluded the program by singing the "Star Spangled Banner." Cousins Visit At Stennett Home Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Stennett of Monterey Park, Cal., who have been making an extended trip through the northwest states, stopped in Medford Sun day afternoon for a brief visit with Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Sten nett, 323 South Riverside avenue while enroute to their California home. The Stennetts are cousins and 32 years had passed since they last met.
