Walker presided over the soc iety meeting and also the home coming of the circles which Im mediately followed. Snma motnli like zinc can be a i .-cfiW.-H in almost anv com mon acid. When common salt i. thrown into water, it dis solves. The liquid becomes clear but the weight of the water in creases. So it is with gold. When metallic gold comes in contact with cyanide in solution, the gold is also taken into solution and the weight of the liquid is increased by the exact weight of the gold. If pure, the solvent rwwnmp clear and looks like ordinary water, but the gold is there. It is in solution. Principle Explained When gold bearing ore Is irrniinH tn the reauired mesh anri immrrcwl in a cvanide tank. the gold is extracted very much on the same principle tnai ora- inary water removes tne sail from a piece of bacon, the dif ference being that the salt is obtainable merely by evapora tion, while gold must be re placed by some other metal. Zinr ia rommonlv used for that displacement. The gold-bearing liquid is run tnrougn noxes con taining zinc shavings where the zinc is dissolved and tne goia dropped In the form of a black mud. When this blacK mua is mixed with a little borax and heated in a crucible, it is con verted into pure yellow goia. Other Acids Work Cyanide is not the only acid which dissolves gold but it is the cheapest and easiest to em ploy. Selenic acia, oromine, chlorine- and " aqua regla also dissolve gold. It is the chlorine generated in goia veins irai leaches gold ana omer meiais out above water level and re deposits them below water, creating "pockets" that miners seek. Other acids attack other metals first and gold last, wnue nirlo attacks Bold first, wltn a few exceptions. Because iron is hardly attacked by cyanide. ordinary iron barrels can oe used in place of expensive tanks fnr hi eh arade ore. My brother and I have been using Iron bar rels occasionally for three years and have not had one destroyed vat hv rvanide. After roasting, ordinary orinHina usuallv Is sufficient for cyaniding. As a rule, from three to five pounds of cyaniae are used per ton of water, but in hinh srade ore more cyanide is required. From 24 to 38 hours are required for dissolving tne gold in most " ores. Leaching should be started after 12 hours.
