WATER CARNIVAL A water carnival designed to display the results of training they have received will be staged at the natatorium Sat urday night by enrollees of the annual Red Cross swimming and lifesaving school, which has been conducted by Charles L. Eaton and group of expert lo cal assistants. The carnival, which will start at 8 o'clock, will bring the two-weeks school to a close. There will be no charge and the public is cord ially invited to attend. Although all the 450 enrolled students won't participate in the show, there will be repre sentatives from each of the classes. Demonstrations will be made of the various swimming strokes and lifesaving tactics, and actual competition will be held in various events. HOME RUN ... A BOYS WILL OBJECT TO E Careful attention to dogs after their annual three months' con finement is now needed so that the pets will not let their pro tective instinct develop so much as to endanger newspaper car riers, mail carriers, milk men and others, the Southern Ore gon Humane society advised pet owners today. Dogs also should have plenty of fresh, cool water in this hot weather so that they will not became irritable, the society said. The advice was given after two Mail Tribune carriers, Jackie Clark and Tommy Tam, were bitten by dogs Wednesday afternoon. Jackie was bitten on the left side as he delivered papers on West 11th street, Tommy on the right foot on West Jackson boulevard. If the service period for the national guard and selectees is extended beyond the year orig inally intended, there will be no kick from most of the men, Capt. Weldon H. McBee said to day. Capt. McBee is commanding officer of Company A, 186th in fantry, the former Oregon na tional guard company here, now in the regular army at Fort Lewis, Wash. Capt. McBee Is home on a 10-day furlough. "There'll be no complaint from national guardsmen at ail and very few of the selectees will grumble," Capt. McBee said. "We're all anxious to do what is best for our country and if the military experts think we should remain in the service be yond the year, we are ready to stay. They should know best." The selectees in Company A are a "fine bunch of boys," Capt. McBee stated. In a recent ques tionnaire to determine their abilities it was found that 20 of the Company A boys could read, write and speak a foreign language, he said. were set In the Coast range west of Roseburg by an electric storm Thursday afternoon, but a heavy rain which followed prevented their spread and all were quick ly controlled, according to Fred Southwick, supervising warden of the Douglas County Forest Protective association. IN SEATTLE HEAT Seattle, July 18 Nine Seattle produce men today tele graphed to the U. S. agriculture department, blaming the citrus fruit pro-rate in California for the current heat wave lemon shortage which has sent prices from $5 and $6 to $8 and $10 per crate. Hardware and electrical ap pliance dealers said the demand had been so great this week that not a single electric fan, suitable for home or office use, was available at any price, and that some stores, to keep goodwill, had sold the fans out of their own offices. ROOSEVELT SAYS ICELAND DEFENSE IS 'A.B.C. STUFF' Washington, July 18. m President Roosevelt declared to day it was the policy of the United States to defend Iceland and also to afford protection for the American garrison in the North Atlantic island. Therefore, he told a press con ference, it is what he termed ABC stuff to keep open the sea lanes to Iceland. The orders, he said, are to provide protec tion against attack or any threat of attack. And he added that no one In the room, including himself, could define threat of attack. Mr. Roosevelt discussed the Iceland situation In response to this question: "What is being done to keep the sea lanes to Iceland open?" He referred reporters to his message to congress notifying it that American forces had en tered the Island and said that message was perfectly definite and clear and nothing really need be said further. William Ord Ryan, commanding officer of Hamilton field, San Rafael, Cal., helped to deplete southern Oregon streams In the short time he visited here. The general hopped Into his bomber yesterday afternoon and headed back for his home station with a 30-pound salmon all wrapped up in ice as evidence of his angling skill. He watched his prize catch while Lieut. Michael Gordon piloted the plane. Gen. Ryan came up Wednes day morning to fish and see the men of his 20th pursuit group who are camping on the Elks picnic grounds. The group's publicity officer, Lieut. Howard T. Wright, in telling of the general's catch, spread his arms out as far as they could go and experts figured the weight of the fish by the lieutenant's wing spread. BUYS PARSONAGE The Rev. R. W. Coleman. pastor of the First Christian j church, announced today that the church had purchased the residence at 1102 West Tenth! street from T. J. Hampson for j use as a parsonage. The place ! has been rented as a parsonage and used by Mr. Coleman since ' his coming to Medford. I Mr. Coleman plans to leave ! tomorrow for Ketchum, Idaho, where he will serve as dean of a Young People's summer conference for the week be ginning July 21. ! 1EI In the possession of Fenton H. Camp of Medford, world war veteran in the 4th division, 77th field artillery, is a copy of the San Francisco Examiner of Sep tember 18, 1917, which features an entire page article by James W. Gerard, American ambassa dor to Germany during the early stages of the war, dealing with the brutal treatment of British prisoners In Germany. Mr. Camp enlisted in the U. S. army at Kansas City, Mo., and was discharged at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
