Newspaper Page Textf MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRTDAY. JULY IS, 1941. PAGE FTVTJ . THERESIA SCHEFFEL, AGED 86, SUMMONED AFTER LONG ILLNESS Mrs. Theresla P. Scheffel. 88 years of age and a resident of Medford (or the last 1J years, passed away at her home, 704 West 8th street, at 7:20 p. m. Thursday. She had been in fail ing health for more than a year. Mrs. Scheffel was born at Cin cinnati, Ohio. April 17, 1885. It was there that she was united iii marriage at the age of 18, to William Scheffel now deceased Soon after their marriage, they went to Denver, Colo., where Mr. Scheffel engaged in mining during the gold rush of Cripple Creek. They moved from there to Butte, Mont., and from there to Medford. ' Six children survive, Mrs, Herman Lewis, of Boise, Idaho; Howard Scheffel, of San Fran cisco; Leslie, of Roseburg, Ore gon; Fred and Dollie Dee Schef fel, and Mrs. Frank Rogers, of Medford. Also eight grandchil dren end two brothers and one sister, J. W. Seitz of Los An geles; J. C. Seitz, Butte, Mont, and Mrs. Rose Enderle of Mt. Healthy, Ohio. Funeral services will be con ducted by Rev. Father A. Meyer at the Conger chapel at 2 p. m. Saturday. Interment will be in the Medford I.O.O.F. cemetery. CHINOOK PLENTIFUL AT MOUTH OF ROGUE Chinook salmon fishing in the lower Rogue river is right now better than at any time in years, with limit catches being made by scores of anglers, according to a report from D. P. DeVoe of Gold iBeach. DeVoe also sent word that steelhead were starting to hit spinners, and that a few were being caught upstream on flies. Clara Daniels was In charge of the program and told inter esting highlights regarding ac tivities of the group which at tended Fir Point conference, held recently. Mary Glascock re ported on various classes, their subject matter and instructors. Election of officers in the three districts of the Presbyterial was described by June Jarmine. La- nar Coverstone gave his impres sions of the Faggot Service, cli max of the week's activities. Refreshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Iva Murray and Mrs. Anna Hodg kins. Janitors' Association To Hold Sunday Outing The Southern Oregon Jan itors' association will hold a picnic at McKee bridge on the Applegate river Sunday at 11 a. m. All janitors and their families are invited. The asso ciation's new officers, Jack Cas per, president, from Medford and C. F. Bishop, vice president from Ashland are in charge of the picnic committee. Former Resident to Live In Brooklyn Mrs. Vernon Poret left yester day morning for Brooklyn, N.Y., , where she will join her husband !who has been transferred from the Long Beach navy yards to the Brooklyn yards. Mrs. Poret 'has been visiting her mother, 'Mrs. Laura Jones, S43 South Ivy street for the past two months. Before her marriage i she was Winifred Jones. Miss Doris Beckman of Port land, who has been attending the first session of summer school at the Southern Oregon College of Education at Ash land expects to return north this weekend after residing at the Fowler home. Sister Arrives For Visit Mrs. Tavia Shaw of Portland arrived this morning for a 10 day visit at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Elliott, 312 King street. Tacoma, July 18. (Ft Semi finals in the men's singles of the Pacific northwest tennis tournament were on the pro gram for this afternoon. Dick Bennett of Tacoma, the defending champion, was to meet Nick Carter of San Fran cisco in one bracket while Ronald English, Oakland school teacher, was to take on Emery Neale of Portland in the other half. Bennett advanced yesterday by defeating Warren Lowen bein, San Francisco, 6-2, 6-0, while Carter moved ahead by defeating Jack Gurley, Sacra mento. 6-1, 6-2. Neale and Eng lish had reached the semis earlier. The men's doubles semi-finals yesterday saw Bob and Dick Odman. Seattle, defeat Bennett and Don Lewis, Portland, 6-4. 6-2. The result was regarded as an upset. AT T Seattle, July 18 (P) Among 22 college men from the north west who arrived at the Sand Point naval air base yesterday for flight training was Robert S Hinman, Medford, Ore. Robert S. Hinman is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry S. Hin man of 338 South Holly street. He is a Medford high school graduate and attended the Uni versity of Oregon and Willam ette university. At the latter school he starred in football, be ing named All-Northwest con ference end in 1939. I HEAD STATE BODY Bend, July 18. W Mrs. Winifred G. Wisecarver, post master at McMinnville. was elected president of the Oregon chapter. National Association of Postmasters at the final con vention business session yester day. Burt E. Hawkins, Klamath Falls postmaster, was elected vice president, and Mae M. Humphrey, postmaster at Bor ing, secretary-treasurer. Dr. E. T. Hcdlund, Portland pastmasttr. was elected first national director from Oregon and Gladys M. Heath. Rogue River postmaster, second na' tional director. Pour In Jules and wa ter. Cook slowly and stir until creamy. Add butter and chill. Be fore serving, thin with whipped, sour or sweet cream. Sour Cream aptca Cakes 11 cup fat 1 cup dark brown sugar 14 teaapoona cinnamon 1 teaspoon clovea 4 teaspoon nutmeg s teaspoon aalt 1 egs, beaten 1 cup sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla. 3 cupa flour 1 teaspoon soda 4 teaspoon baking powder Cream fat and augar. P) A would-be rescuer drowned last night in an effort to save the life of a woman Clackamas County Coroner Tom J. Myers said was suicide. Myers said that Mrs. Lucy Loving, 58, ill and despondent. leaped into Lake Oswego. Don ald W. Moore, 38, weary from a day of house painting, dived after her. Both drowned. Jean M. Lawler, about 15, Portland, drowned In a gravel pit near Barlow yesterday. He was one of three boys from the state training school at Woodburn taken swimming by the school staff. CENTRALPT.1L Central Point. July 18 (Spl.) Second Lt. Harry Gillett will speak from 8 to 8:30 p. m. at the Grange hall today on "The Army Air Corps." Following his talk he will answer questions. Lieut. Gillett was born in Topeka, Kas., and has attended Alabama, Randolph Field and Kelly Field, graduating from the latter in July, 1940. He has been flying about a year and a half as a pursuit pilot in the 20th pursuit group and is rated as one of the best. He has had between 400 and 800 hours in the air. Ruth Bampton of Beaver College, Pennsylvania, an outstanding leader in the eastern music world, will be guest organist at the First Presbyterian church and Mary Ann Gates the guest soloist.
