a new edition of the "National
Forest Scaling Handbook" could
now be procured by applying
to the Superintendent of Docu

Camper Fire A small fire
that burned about a quarter
acre in fir timber on Elk creek
yesterday afternoon was attrib
uted by Rogue River national
forest headquarters today to a
camper. The blaze, discovered
by Howard Ash from his nearby
home, started along a trail in
a pile of logs. A forest service
crew of three men put the fire
out.

today offering him an appoint
ment as associate inspector of
signal corps equipment in Brook
lyn, N. Y. The message came

gram be mailed to her son who
has been employed for some
time in engineering work at the
Mare Island navy yard, Vallejo,

City Judge Allen D. Curry
this morning dismissed a com
plaint filed by H. K. Webber
against O. L. McVey charging
assault and beating, following
an altercation in front of a
South Front street club last
night in which Webber charged
that McVey knocked him down
with a blow to the side of the
head.
McVey, an employe of the
club; struck Webber after the
latter allegedly used harsh lan
guage to a woman employe of
the establishment. Judge Curry,
after listening to the woman's
testimony, dismissed Webber's
complaint.
LEAVE FOR CAMP
Company A and headquarters
detachment, third battalion,
186th Infantry, the former Ore
gon national guard units here,
left for their Fort Lewis base
early this morning after enjoy
ing a leave at their homes since
Tuesday.
The convoy of transport and
supply trucks started rolling out
of the camp at the old fair
grounds soon after dawn. The
boys were entertained exten
sively during their brief stay
here.

to no union gave Grants Pass
its first local strike today In the

Most of the men receive 48
and 30 cents an hour, they said,
