Returns Home Thomai New comb of Lot Angelei wai to leave for home this afternoon af ter spending a week here as a guest at the home of his brother, Paul Newcomb, 23 Rose avenue. Arrives Miss Lila Jeffers of Wildrose, Wis., arrived here by train today for a few days' visit with Mrs. B. J. Donelson, 331 Haven street. Miss Jeffers has been visiting points of interest in southern California. Assigned Nelson F. Smith, educational adviser, reported at Medford CCC headquarters to day. For the past year Mr. Smith has been stationed at Camp Hart Mountain, near Lakeview. Be cause of the disbandment of his company today, Mr. Smith has been ordered to report to Camp South Fork where he will re sume similar duties. Added To Staff 1st Lieut. By ron Doll was today added to the staff of Capt. Theron W. Bean, constructing quartermaster in charge of army cantonment planning work here. In the coast artillery reserve, Lieut. Doll was recently called to extended ac tive duty. He was employed for some time as a construction en gineer with the Los Angeles city and county water board. He was accompanied to Medford by his wife. The couple will reside here. Minor Accidents Frank L. Barber, Jr., of 618 McAndrews road and A. M. Palmer, whose address was not listed, drove cars involved in a slight mishap at Riverside avenue and Main street early this morning, a re port on file said. Machines op erated by Elmer W. Spaulding of Grants Pass and Royal Klumph of 1140 Court street were involved in a minor acci dent on Court street last night, according to a report on file to day. Army Typists Sgt. Joseph W. Cushman, in charge of the re cruiting station in the Medford federal building, stated today that a special effort was being made to enlist qualified clerk typists or stenographers for corps area command unit No. 1901, recruiting and induction service. Preference, he said, would be given to prior-service men or those who have had na tional guard, R.O.T.C. or C. M. T. C. training. Men enlisted will be stationed at recruiting offices and induction centers on the Pa cific coast. Those stationed out side regular army posts will re ceive $70 a month for rations and quarters in addition to reg ular base pay, Cushman stated. Schools ara provided for the enlisted men and rapid advancement in the service is possible for am bitious youths, Sgt. Cushman said in asking eligibles to call on him at his office. e Return From Trip Dr. and Mrs. James C. Hayes and chil dren. Dorothy, Virginia, and Larry, returned Sunday to their home, 833 East Main street, af ter a motor trip to Baker where they visited old friends. Dr. Hayes and Dorothy rode in the rodeo narade dtirinff tha Julv A holiday celebration. They motor ed to eastern Oregon by way of the John Day highway and said they especially enjoyed the Ochoco national forest. Dr. Hayes said that range lands were the greenest in years and that agricultural produce in eastern Oregon, in Umatilla, Moro and Sherman counties, was the best in years. Leonard Weston officiating. Interment will be in Ashland memorial mausoleum. Mrs. Campbell, a resident of Medford for the past 14 years, was born at Lisbon, N. D., July 13, 1902, and moved to Tacoma, Wash, with her parents when she was 4 years of age. She graduated from Tacoma High school, and attended Oregon State college for three years, be ing affiliated with ZeU Tau Al pha, women's sorority. During the past five years she has been employed by the Cali fornia Oregon Power Company, where she was very popular, and leaves a host ot friends to mourn her departure. She was united in marriage to Eugene Campbell at Crescent City, Calif., July 13, 1940. Be sides her husband, she is sur vived by one son, Robert Stuart Watson, four sisters, Mrs. W. J. Meade, Margaret Lois Short, Mrs. William Tabelle. all of Ta coma, Mrs. B. E. Hanna of Spo- aane, wash., and one brother, Stuart H. Short of Ashland, Ore. The ever-present menace of shark-infested pools and lurking jungle perils makes the picture outstanding as the most exciting adventure film brought to the screen in recent years. And. with all due credit to Frank Buck and Martin Johnson, those intrepid adventurers never met with quite so many dangerous situations as are shown in "The Shark Woman." A twenty-foot python crushing the life breath out of a man in full view ot the audience; a native, armed with only knife, fighting a tiger- shark in the treacherous ocean depths; death at eveiy turn on shipboard, in the sea, on land all combine to make the picture full of continuous sus pense that has never been matched. 'The Shark Woman" derives its title from the native law of Samarang. where the women must fight side by side with their mates, or perish. When Sai-Yu's lover, Ahmang, young Adonis of Malaysia and hero of all the pearl divers throughout the Indian ocean, loses his knife when attacked by a shark it is Sal-Yu, the shark woman who twists her lithe body through the green waters to save Ahmang s life. A new Hopalong Cassidy western hit, "Pirates on Horse back," starring Bill Boyd, is the companion feature on the twin bill. For "Meet John Doe" Is Capra at his best, providing him the opportunity to embellish the film with the little bits of humor and earthy drama that have marked Capra productions since he first flash ed on the scene many years ago. But "Meet John Doe" is not wholly a triumph for Capra. It is also another triumph for Gary Cooper, who portrays John Doe. And, as in "Mr, Deeds," Cooper again proves that, given the right kind of role he can turn in a perform ance that will stack up with any of 'em. As John Doe, typical American citizen. Cooper is John Doe, or John Doe is Coo per, either way you want to look at it. Barbara Stanwyck, lovelier than ever, returns to the Capra fold (did you know it was his "Ladies of Leisure" that first started her to screen fame?) with another bang-up character ization. After several rather mediocre parts, this Stanwyck girl is finally coming Into her own again and proving her right to good parts. In "Meet John Doe." Cooper is a poor, young man fighting for an idea. You like what he represents, so you root for him neart and soul.
