Expect to March, 5 A.M BY VOLUNTEERS SOLDIERS ENJOY E' DANCE; PRESENTED Company A and headquarters detachment, third battalion, 186th infantry, will be on the march again early tomorrow morning, oif for their station at Fort Lewis. Wasn., atter a stay here since Tuesday. Although official word on the time of departure had not yet been received, Capt. Weldon H. McBee, commanding Company A, said that still effective were the orders for all the men to report to their camp at the old fairgrounds at 1 o'clock to night. He expected the column of about 17S men and half a dozen officers to be under way by 5 a. m. The two units are Medford butfits, having been part of the Oregon national guard here. Since their arrival here the boys have had a number of kinds of recreation offered them without charge as a token of the commu nity's appreciation of their ser vice. The units are part of the 41st division which recently completed maneuvers in California. Another Medford officer home on leave during the present re turn of troops northward is Lieut. Ibsen Nelsen. Mr. Nel- sen is a product of Company A but upon receiving his commis sion as second lieutenant re cently he was transferred to Company C, which has been en camped since Tuesday in Grants Pass. "He's a fine officer, we hate to lose him from Company A, but we are all proud of him and claim him as our own, said Capt. McBee. Registration Places Will Re main Open Until 8 Tonight Early Reports Urged A heavy registration of Jack son county citizens 18 years and older for voluntary defense ser vice in case of need was ex pected today, particularly in the urban centers, it was stated by Frank Hull, coordinator of the Jackson County Council of De fense, sponsor of the registration. Registration places, the regu lar precinct election polling centers, opened at 2 p. m. and were to remain open until 8 o'clock tonight. The council has asked all adults, both men and women, 18 years or older, to register and specify what they are best qualified to do to that there will be a handy record of trained workers for voluntary civilian defense in case of any emergency. Registration may be done in whatever precinct is most convenient. First to turn in a completed registration form was Mayor H. S. Deuel. Early Report Urged All Medford precinct registra tion boards were instructed to take their registrations and sup plies to the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce as soon as possible after the close of the polls at 8 p. m. The cham ber of commerce office will be kept open until 9 p. m. to re ceive the lists and supplies, Mr. Hull said. County Clerk George R. Car ter took the last of the regis tration supplies to the outlying precincts yesterday. He had previously given personal in structions to the election boards in the rural areas. PROHOUMCIft BITMACK Medford' own soldier boys were guests of honor at a highly successful dance given by Med ford Post of the American Le gion at the Oriental Gardens last night. The spacious floor was thronged with dancers and there was no lack of pretty girls for they were there by the score to welcome the local members of Uncle Sam's army back home. A brief break in the dance program came at 10:30 when Past Commander Lloyd William son requested all soldier guests to assemble before the stage where he introduced Mayor H. S. Deuel, also a past command er of Medford Post, who extend ed a hearty welcome to the of ficers and men in behalf of the city of Medford. He then intro duced Commander E. W. Winkle of Medford Post who greeted the soldiers in behalf of the Ameri can Legion. Shortly before midnight a floor show was presented by sev eral talented young ladies of the Ruth Luy studios. They were the Misses Colleen Winterhald er, Aletha Emerick and Kath leen Hammack with Miss Laura Gentner as accompanist. At the close of the program, Captain Weldon McBee was called to the platform and was presented with a check for $162. 78 by Commander Winkle. The amount represented the entire proceeds of the dance and was given to the Medford soldiers for their welfare fund. Captain Mc Bee expressed his sincere ap preciation for the generous gift and for the fine hospitality ex tended by the Legion and the citizens of Medford. The committee in charge of the affair included E. W. Winkle, E. C. Ferguson, Jos. Fliegel, Fritz Nissen, Virgil Ballantyne, Ray Wright and Horace Brom ley. AMERICAN PLANES BEST, SAYBRITISH An Airfield, somewhere in England, July 10 (IP) American-built military planes are bet ter than or compare favorably with the best British-made craft, say . the test pilots who have given them "the works" at alti tudes as high as 39,000 feet. American warplanes brought these reports from British test pilots: The four-motored B17C Boe ing bomber is definitely better than the new British Stirling and Halifax of comparable size. The Boeing can do 305 miles per hour with a four-ton bomb load. The Douglas DB7, two-mo tored night pursuit ship, is "the heaviest armed fighter in the world" and one of the fastest big planes ever made. It can do about 350 m.p.h. to prison yesterday by Superior Judge Warren V. Tryon follow ing their conviction of grand theft charges in connection with a Crescent City cattle rustling I case. Carl Wood, Grants Pass. Ore., riding academy operator, in volved in the case, is serving a term in Oregon state prison after his conviction at Grants Pass. Two others, John Eller and Harvey Watkins, also in volved in the case, are free on probation.
