Hiring of 73 WPA painters at sub-union wages precipitated the walk-out. At Muskegon, Mich., the AFL United Auto Workers struck the plant of the Sealed Power Corp., which manufactures engine parts for tanks, submarines and trucks. The union is demanding wage increases and a union shop contract. Wages scales were not disclosed. A spokesman for the AFL Electrical Workers union assert ed the Charlestown walk -off was neither a strike nor a dispute and that 400 workers simply left to seek Jobs at higher wages elsewhere. At S1.31U an hour, they were employed on instal lation of the third smokeless powder . production line. At nearby defense operations, union leaders claimed, the comparable wage rate is $1.50 an hour. No Pickets The union said no pickets would be established and any union men whoawished to do so could take Jobs on the ordnance project. Army officers said the sub-contractor would be respons ible for seeing that the electrical work is completed. Meanwhile, James V. Bennett, federal prison director, said Leavenworth penitentiary in Kansas was returning to normal routine after the government broke a convict strike there by tending ringleaders to Alcatraz and other federal prisons. The prisoners, making shoes and brushes for the army, re portedly protested against their working hours, which Justice de partment officials said had re cently been increased from 3D to 44 hours a week. Albany, Ore., July 9. (tFi Collision of an automobile and an army convoy truck on the Pacific highway near Harrisburg yesterday broke the leg of Clyde M. Priestly, San Francisco, and injured Homer Broom, Seattle, both civilians. Broom was not seriously hurt. Corporal Frank A. Proehazka. riding in the truck, suffered a cut lip. Pilchard Price Up Astoria, Ore., July 9. 0P A new price of $14 a ton for pilchards, an Increase of $2.50 per ton over the price previous ly agreed upon by operators and fishermen, was posted today by pilchard plant owners. (IP) George J. Armstrong, 39, a Briton, was executed by hanging today as a spy for Germany. An announcement said he had made contact with the German espionage organizations through an intermediary of a German consul in the United Stages. Armstrong was convicted of treason May 8. He was an engin eer who served at sea at 1939 and 1940. IN LIVELY CLASH Pottsville, Pa., July 9. W) Twelve miners were injured, nine of them wounded superfic ially by shotgun tire, and eight private detectives were beaten today in a clash over coal strip ping operations at Donaldson, 16 miles west of Pottsville. The injured were treated at Pottsville hospital. All were dis charged. The detectives were bruised and battered by the surging crowd of miners as they left the scene where the shots were fired.
