Loretta ,Young start in the first "Western" role of her ca reer In the new frontier comedy, "The Lady. From Cheyenne," opening a three-day run today at the Craterian theatre. A distinguished supporting cast includes Robert Preston, Edward Arnold, Gladys Ralph, Frank Craven, Jessie Ralph, Stanley Fields, Samuel S. Hinds, Willie Best and others. Based in part on historical incident, Lloyd's comedy takes place on the Wyoming frontier of 1870. Miss Young, as a naive but determined young school teacher, comes out from Phila delphia, to wke her fortune and runs afoul a gang of crooked politicians led by Arnold and Preston. A conflicting romance grows between Miss Young and Pres ton, and meanwhile she is goad ed by mounting anger to break the power of the gang. How she accomplishes this supplies the plot for one of the season's most novel and entertaining screen vehicles. "Las Vegas Nights" with Tommy Dor sey On Rialto Program The nation's Number One swing orchestra, a group of grand entertainers, and an amus ing, fast-moving story are com bined to make "Las Vegas Nights", which opens for today and tomorrow only at the Rialto theatre, a snappy, tune-filled thoroughly pleasing picture. And, according to advance re ports from key spots that have played the picture, "Las Vegas Nights" is the one picture in a million to send audiences out in that gay, happy mood. Featuring Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra, one of the best ag gregations of music-makers in the country, and Bert Wheeler, the comedian who is seen all too rarely on the screen to suit his many admirers, and a host of other very pleasant people, "Las Vegas Nights" sets out right from the start to be entertain nig. Among the many featured stars are Constance Moore. Phil Regan, Betty Brewer, Lillian Cornell, Virginia Dale and Red Donahue and his mule, "Uno". The gay, always-bubbling town of Los Vegas, Nevada, with its exciting gambling tables, its wide-open night clubs, and fron tier life merging with modern refinements serves as the pic ture's locale. The story concerns the adventures of a . vaudeville troupe made up of Wheeler and his dancing girls who go to Las Vegas to collect an inheritance. They are befriended by Phil Regan, a rich rancher who helps them to make a stake and a hit at the local night spots. Four songs which have al ready found popularity are heard In the new musical. They are "Dolores", "Moments Like This", "Mary, Mary, Quite Con trary" and "I Gotta Ride." Six other hits are included in the Dorsey "swing parade." Slayer Pays Eddyville, Ky., July 8. Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck are starred in Frank Capra's 1041 hit, "Meet John Doe", which comes to the Cra terian theatre Wednesday for a four-day run. With Walter Brennan, Edward Arnold, Spring Byington, James Gleason and Gene Lockhart in the principal supporting roles. "Meet John Doe" Is a typical Capra show, a story ot an aver age American and his troubles. The Capra touch that has made him famous as Hollywood's fore most producer-director, is very evident in the many little sly bits which are injected into the story. STOCKS END WEEK T New York, July 8. (JP) Strength of a handful of spec ialties today put a little back bone into stock market leaders generally and enabled the list to finish a fairly satisfactory week leaning slightly upward. While gains of 1 to 2 points were tacked on a few favorites, plus signs elsewhere were in minor fractions at the close of the brief proceedings. Numer ous issues were unchanged or off a shade. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was up .1 of a point at 41.0 and showed a net gain of .2 on the week. Transfers totalled 180,470 shares compared with 139,550 last Saturday. JACK SHERMAN LEADS IN KLAMATH ROUNDUP Klamath Falls, July 5. (JP) Jack Sherman of Klamath Falls was in the lead over visit ing cowhands at the Buckaroo Days rodeo entered its second day today. (JP) Quick thinking on the part of Mrs. William Lindstrom of East Stanwood and the fortitude to carry out her plan of action in the face of danger were cred ited with saving the life of her husband when he was Involved in an accident on the farm of Mrs. Peter Leque of Stanwood recently. Lindstrom became entangled in the tines of a hay rake when the team he was driving ran away. Twice he was dragged around the field before Mrs. Lindstrom, seeing her husband's plight, stepped in front of the racing horses and threw an arm ful of hay into their eyes. As the horses veered sharply the rake tilted onto one wheel, re leasing Lindstrom, who was un conscious, badly battered and severely lacerated. London, July 8.
