Wy- man, Medford painter, was ar rested by city police last night on a drunkenness charge and released on his own recogniz ance to appear in city court to morrow morning. At Coast City Miss Letha Hesslegrave of Central Point, a student at the Southern Oregon College of Education at Ashland. and Charles H. Ward of 1260 Sunset avenue were among local residents attending the Fourth of July celebration in Crescent City, Cal., today. At Lake Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Latham, 1 Loring Court, and Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Tucker, 2233 ! Aloha street, are among Med- fordites spending the Fourth of July holiday at Lake of -the Woods where the Tuckers have a summer cottage. They left for the lake resort last night and were expected back tomorrow afternoon. Camping Miss Mary Ward of Venice, Cal., and Miss Lena van Amburgh of Pasadena, Cal., both school teachers in southern Cal ifornia, are spending part of their vacation camping on the Applegate. They are prospecting for gold for the fun and educa tional experience involved. Miss Ward specializes in educational motion pictures for young school children and some of her pic tures have been shown at the University of California at Los Angeles and other leading insti tutions. A pariodic visitor here. Miss Ward is a sister-in-law of Mrs. John D. Leo nard of Wellington Heights, and a former resident of Medford now residing in San Francisco, is visiting in the city over the week-end. On Active Duty C. W. Che ney, a member of the staff of of the Medford Service Station. is now in active service with the army at Fort Lewis. Wash. He is a first lieutenant and was called for duty July 1. Visits Mother Miss Char lotte Beeson, student at Wood bury college, Los Angeles ar rived by mainliner today to visit over the week-end at the home of her mother, Mrs. Smith E. Trent, 539 Pennsylvania avenue. . Ex-Resident Hera Richard Patrick, former Medford resi dent now residing in Davis, Cal., arrived by motorcar this morning to visit over the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hanlin. 1016 East Jackson boulevard. Limited Camping in the Im proved lakeshore forest camp sites at Diamond lake will hence forth be limited to IS days for any one party so that all may have an opportunity, it was stat edin a press release received to day from V. V. Harpham, super visor of the Umpqua national forest. The forest service recre ational . improvements at Dia mond lake were made to take care of 30.000 visitors a year whereas visitors now number more than '100,000 a season, Mr. Harpham explained in ex pressing regret that the limita tion had become necessary. Visiting Hera Al Henderson of Salem arrived here yester day to spend 10 days or two weeks visiting Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Lamport, south Pacific 'high way. The visitor and Mr. Lam port are old school chums, hav ing been brought up together in Salem. The two men visited Crater Lake national park yes terday and planned to go to Diamond lake today to spend several days at the Lamport cabin. Plane Passengers Arriving early this morning by United Mainliner were Miss C. Beeson and Mrs. G. Michel, from Los Angeles. Departing for Portland were H. Hart, K. Williams, and A. Bravender. R. Chaffee ar rived from Portland on the mid night plane. Departing for Port land last night were Miss M. Otterdale and P. Hawes. Ar rivals from Portland on the evening plane were H. Lewis, Mrs. Al Gilhousen and Anne Francis. Departing were F. Alley, to Los Angeles, J. Jewett. to Oakland, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. Don Darneille, to San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. G. Cameron arrived . from San Francisco on the afternoon plane and L. Stinson left for Portland. Heads LaGrande Schools La Grande, Ore., July 4. (If) Fred J. Patton, superintendent ; of St. Helens public schools, was named today to succeed Arnold J. Gralapp as head of , the La Grande public school sys tem. He will assume his duties ! here July 15. Dse Mall Tribune want ads. 'HOST BEATEN, ROBBED HE TELLS POLICE . Although he was not "especi ally anxious to file a complaint", according to state police, Ken neth Sauby, who resides in the Osenbrugge cabins on South Riverside avenue, early this morning told city and state po lice that two soldiers of the Ninth Army Corps beat him up and took $6 from him after he had entertained them during the evening. Sauby reported to city police that the two soldiers, belonging to the mechanized caravan trav eling from Camp Liggett in California to Camp Lewis, hit him in front of the Chicken Inn on South Riverside avenue, about 1:30 this morning, took his $6 and walked away. City police said the two soldiers were seen walking north on Riverside avenue and later taking the 2:15 a. m. stage north. The army caravan encamped in Grants Pass last night and was to remain there today. Some 400 vehicles passed through Medford late yesterday morning and early afternoon. Talking to state police this morning, Sauby displayed a black eye. He was quoted as say ing that he wasn't anxious to prosecute, but that he Just want ed his $6 back. He was informed that it would be necessary for him to go to Grants Pass and identify the soldiers, and police were unable to say whether he had done this. San Francisco. July 4. Frank Van Dyke Will Be Speaker Frank Van Dyke, cantonment civic coordinator, will be guest speaker at the meeting of the Pro America, Republican wom en s organization, at a lunch eon Wednesday at 12 noon at the Hotel Medford. Miss Daily Is a former Medford resident. WILCOX ORDERED TO ACTIVE DUTY Lyle P. Wilcox of 910 West Main street, a captain in the field artillery reserve, was un der orders today to report for active duty with the air corps at Gray field. Fort Lewis, Wash. He said he would leave for the army post July 15. Mrs. Wilcox will remain here for the present. Capt. Wilcox, former Jackson county horticulturist, served in the field artillery in the World war. Drivers' Licenses Show Heavy Gain Salem, July 4. (P The state department reported to day it has received applications for 333.107 driver's licenses, a gain of 75,000 over the same date a year ago. Wednesday 38,562 persons ap plied for licenses, largest single day's total in history. State Police Superintendent Charles P. Pray said his officers already are arresting drivers without licenses, which should have been obtained by July 1. Cobb To Visit Band Bend, Ore., July 4. W Irving S. Cobb, writer and hu morist, was expected here to day as the guest of S. O. John son, Berkeley, Cal., lumberman. Cobb has been here twice be fore, once as a lecturer and once on a hunting trip. (If) Lady Diana Duff Cooper, wife of Alfred Duff Cooper, ninister of information, was fined 25 shillings ($5.00) to lay at Bognor Regis, Sussex, (or parking her car on the wrong side of the road and driving without a license. DIVE BOMBER SUPPLYGROWING Washington, July 4 (Pf The army air force has started to receive regular deliveries on dive-bombers, it was learned to day, and plans have been com pleted for organizing by Novem ber at least six squadrons of these improved American coun-l terparta of Germany's famed Stukas. Authoritative Indications were that approximately 100 dive bombers would be available for use in fall maneuvers when American troops will receive their first large scale training in the coordinated employment of air and ground forces. In addition to these new army planes, a flight of navy dive bombers will participate in the maneuvers, but the army has not yet Indicated the number of navy planes involved.
