for the past nine years. He came
here as a representative of Gen
eral Petroleum Corporation
from that company's Portland
offices. Sometime later he joined
another major oil company, and
throughout his residence here
has been active In the city's busi
ness and social life.
Commenting on the appoint
ment, Gray states that selection
of the new local agent is in line
with his company's policy to pro
vide representatives in its vari
ous markets, who are thorough
ly versed in the many phases of
the petroleum industry.
"We are pleased to announce
the appointment of a former em
ployee of our company as our
new agent here," said Gray.
"Many years of experience in
the oil business qualify him to
provide a high type of service
to local users of petroleum oro-

in handling of commercial and
industrial lubrication problems.

When interviewed today,
Holmes expressed his satisfac
tion with the opportunity ex
business here as representative
of the company with which he
was once associated.
"I have always had a desire
to have my own business," he
said. "I can think of nothing I
would like better than this op
portunity to represent General
.Petroleum, by whom I was for
merly employed, and to continue
in the service of the community
which I look upon as my home.
"I trust that this is the begin
ning of an association that will
prove increasingly advantageous
both to the company and its
patrons."

huge plant construction program
in excess of 80 per cent over
last year now totaling more
than $70,000,000. heavy in
creased wage payments recently

substantial tax increases.-
'Throughout the entire Pa
cific Coast we are making huge
plant additions to meet the ex
traordinary service require
ments involved In the defense
preparedness and the acceler
ated tempo of business activity,"
Powley stated. "Our working
forces have been considerably
increased In number and we
now have In exrrss of 35,000 em
ployees or over 5,000 more than
a year ago. We have the high
est payroll in the history of the
company.
"The net gain in telephones
In May was 10.841 as compared
with 8.260 in May last year. Net
gain for the first five months of
1941 was 61.598 as compared
with 40.347 for the Correspond
ing period of 1940.
"Toll and Long Distance calls
for the first five months of this
year Increased approximately 22
per cent over the same period
last year.
'The present rate of telephone
growth and increased volume of
toll and long distance business,
both at the highest level in the
history of our company, are due
in large part to defense prepar
edness and, as such, have as
sumed abnormal proportions.
Current rate of earnings may be
considered only as temporary."
