July 2 About 250 miles north of Colum bia river a site has been selected for a naval air station and to develop it the Initial appropri ation will be $8,500,000. Work will start on this station next year, when 1943 fiscal year funds are available. This will be the base of lighter-than-alr ships, tha small gas bags known as blimps. Navy now has six blimps; is ordering six more, and it is pro posed to order 21 additional These blimps cost about $350, 000 each and are practically in destructable and fireproof, for they will be inflated with heli um. (United States has a world 'monopoly on this gas, which is produced in Texas). Subjected to a blaze of machine-gun bul lets, little damage can be done for helium would escape slowly. Another base will be near San Francisco. The Puget sound sta tion and the one near San Fran cisco will send out blimps to pa trol the Oregon coast. Main pur pose of the blimp is to search the sea for submarines, surface craft and for scattered mines. They are not intended for com bat. Cruising speed is 72 miles an hour and they can float along at ten miles or less. Modern air planes traveling 400 miles an hour cannot distinguish sunken submarines or mines. The slow moving blimp does a better job. The cruising radius is 1,800 to 2,000 miles and they have a crew of eight men. One of the score of destroyers being built on the coast and which will hunt for subs, requires a crew of 150 men; costs $5,000,000 and has a speed of 25 knots an hour. NEITHER army nor navy has been enthusiastic about gliders or autogyros, but $100,000 has been earmarked for the navy to experiment with these contrap tions. (Marine corps is using blimps to train Its own carachu- tists). House committee on naval affairs wants the navy to devel op gliders to transport parachute soldiers, as the Germans did at Crete, and it desires experiments with the autogyro which needs no runway but soars straight up and can come straight down on the deck of a ship or float sus-; pended over the spot. Either blimp or autogyro can operate without the need of the runways that are essential to heavier-, than-air bombers and intercep tors. a a THE aerial bombing range ac quired for the army air corps in Oregon contains 3,424 acres, which are off the tax roll.
