In no other field can a man or a erouD of men find wealth more quickly than In the dis covery and development of eood Bold vein. In these days when profits on other invest mnta are being closely watched nrf mnervised and when the stock market is minutely regu lated, one would naturally think that men would seek quick wealth in nome other field. Gold mining offers the opportunities that the stock market oia a i years ago. Man Profits Seen A gold mine, when really productive, produces profits frnm many directions. Profits iinni from thn mine itself, from speculation on its shares and from a general rise in business in community. The Increase in share value is, perhaps, the most important to the specu lator. The Income from produc tion is the most Important to the prospector and the investor. Better business conditions are the result for the business man. In practically no other field of endeavor can a man work on shoestring with the same hope for reward. Many small fortunes have been-taken from the mountain aides of southern Oregon by men who had no other invest ment than a pick, a shovel and a wheelbarrow. Almost any gold-bearing vein, with certain indications on the surface, will yield enough free gold, if pros pected intelligently, to put the mine into operation. I was mazed to find that practically nobody Is developing ore bodies limn studying conditions, i r.m. n the conclusion that thine Is needed to stir ip interest. I was reared in the greatest and largest hard-rock mining district of its kind in the world. I have know, men, many men investing in worthless mines getting rich in business. Natur- , ally no one would advocate making poor investments but nowhere have I seen great panic among business men be cause of a dry hole. Some sensational returns may be seen in a study of individual mines. Of course there have been failures. There have been failures in other business un dertakings, but if men continue to see failure only, they will never know any more success. Curtailment of shipping facili ties plying between Mediterran ean, African, Far Eastern ports and the United States has cut off entirely or depleted supplies of tea, nutmeg, cloves, tapioca, palm and vegetable oils, cara way, celery, mustard and poppy seeds, sage, cream of tartar, olive oil, dates, Arabian coffee for special blends, paprika and extracts used in vanilla and other liquid flavoring. Moreover, supplies of tung oil used in paint; bamboo used in fishing and ski poles, light weight furniture; opium, digi talis, belladonna used for medi cinal purposes; licorice used in Second Lieut Curtis M. Tommies Find No Romance With Girls Wearing Khaki London (UP) Complaints that their uniform is a hind rance to romance and scares sol diers away are made by some of the auxiliary territorial service in a big northern command training center. "Soldier seem to think that the A. T. 3. is either the old maid' last hope or else that to be seen out with one of us indi cates that a soldier has been un able to get a girl outside the barracks" said one of the girl. What do the soldiers say? "We want girls who are not In khaki," said one of them. "We see too much uniform. The A. T. S. is a part of the army just as much as the officers and clerical staff are part of it, and we treat them accordingly. 'Just as few men fall in love with the girl who works in the same office as themselves, so the soldier wants to get hi girl friends from different atmo sphere from that in which he spends his working day." But A. T. S. headquarters in London were shocked at the sug gestion that their girl weren't popular. "Thl may be true of one unit." said an official, "but we have records of hundreds of marriages between A. T. S. girl and soldier they have met at work." Mow Factory Lawn Anderson. Ind. HURT BY HEAVY RAINS County Agent Robert O. Fowler said today a high per centage of the hay held in the field by the showers of the past ten daya was damaged, and had little value as feed, he believed. Work of hauling the hay, after two day of sunshine, started on many farms. Cutting of the sec ond crop 1 expected early next month. Harvesting of wheat and other grain 1 expected to start gen erally next week. Some is al ready underway. The cherry crop has been har vested, and the small berry har vest is now under way. First picking and packing of the Bartlett pear crop Is ex pected around July 23 with the harvest in full blast a week later. No cannery price have yet been brought forth. Some packer and grower predict a $33 to $40 a ton cannery price, due to the defense prosperity, demand for canned fruits, and a smaller crop than last year in the Santa Clara valley.
