INK Reed Professor Sees No Lasting Peace Unless U.S. Willing to Take Helm America must lead the world in the new order to come out of the close of World War 2. Dr. Paul Munk, Reed college faculty member said Friday evening when he addressed large gath ering of Medford citizens at the county court house auditorium. Millions of silent Europeans, said the speaker, lost in the darkness and apparent hopeless ness of a rising totalitarian flood see the light of U. S. ideals as their future. ' Or. Munk maintained that there could be no lasting peace or satisfactory world reconstruc tion unless the United States is willing, not only to collaborate, but take the leadership in peace and "pay the bills." He urged all democracies to unite and cooper ate in the fight for freedom if there is to be any hope of a successful outcome. Speaking of democracies, the Reed college faculty member explained that it is in a certain sense more difficult to be a citi zen of a democracy than a "slave" in a totalitarian country, "because free men have to make up their minds." There is no way for democracy to survive unless citizens are willing to impose the task upon themselves and accept sacrifices that this imposition necessitates. He said that modern educators of democracies had undoubtedly erred in educating youth too much to a life of peace when they should realize that peace can be guaranteed only by the will to defend it from hostile ag gression. Dr. Munk, an economist, op ened his talk by stating that one of the most pressing needs of the moment is stoppage of price increases. He said he was glad to see government agencies al ready taking steps to halt such increases because it would be fatal to let the economic struc ture get out of hand during the vital "battle of production." "National unity is a raw ma terial indispensable for a vic tory," the speaker said, "more important even than money and military machines." He said he believed the American people have a feeling of national unity and eventually would become united, but there is still a long way to go. Hitler Alms Twofold Urging Americans to realize that Hitler's war on Russia was launched for more than oil and wheat. Dr. Munk said he felt that the main objective was to divide the world and particular ly American public opinion. For by this sudden attack on his for mer associate, Hitler meant to confuse the American public and divert possible aid to re maining democracies by capital izing on hatred of Russian com munism. He warned his hearers that the time may come, unless the Nazis are checked, when America will awaken to the startljng fact that Hitler has uflnrii oiucria ana is a neigUDor Just 20 miles away from Alaska and the U. S. A. Other points used by Hitler in gaining his objectives, were mentioned as, one, enemy soft ening up or immobilization by propaganda; two, isolation as a prelude to war, notably in the case of Russia and Turkey; three, creating of dissension among enemies real and potential; four, sudden blitzkrieg, and five, final enslavement. Hitler unfortunately has al ways had the Initiative the speaker pointed out, because the world was not united, lacked foresight, did not think he would take the next step. Therefore, unless democracies stop waiting for Hitler's next step neither military, psychological or econo mic wars can be won the offen sive must be taken by the de mocracies, and Hitler, by super ior force, overthrown. Reconstruction Map Given For reconstruction of the world at the close of present dif ficulties Dr. Munk suggested an International Reconstruction au thority with the U. S. taking the leadership. This authority would reconstruct the world economi cally by outfitting countries with farm machinery and necessary equipment, a Just division of raw materials, and through this action, bettering the lot of the common man. Some such step' is necessary to prevent another devastating depression, the con sequences of which might para lyze if not destroy the capitalis tic system. Dr. Munk appeared in Med ford under auspices of the League of Women Voters in keeping with a nation-wide cam paign for defense and produc tion. Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, president of the league, intro duced the speaker, and called attention to the importance of the battle of production in this country, at the present time. Italy Is sending a motorized division, Finland is going Into the war against Russia. Rumania is already in. The Danes (ever diplomatic relations with the Soviet. Volunteers are said to be offering themselves to the cause in The Netherlands, Belgium and Norway and Sweden is ex tending sympathy and material assistance. In Berlin our familiar friend "authorized German spokesman" describes continental Europe as engaged in a "spontaneous up-1 rising" against Soviet Russia. I WHAT does it mean? MTfiWT mean .nirihina It It could be dust thrown in the eyes of the German people to conceal from them the fact that Hitler isn't getting any nearer to : London. It could also be a bid to Britain and the United States to join in the Job of saving the world from the communist ter ror. , It is obviously a new propa ganda line. It is put out for a purpose. Hitler isn't telling us what his purpose is. X NOTHER straw; The Turk! grant permission for evacuation of Vichy French forces from Syria through Tur key. For the present, at least, Hitler seems to be giving up the war in Syria. Why? We ll have to wait and see. 4 THERE is no further light to- day on the Russians' claim that they have been able to bite off the German panzer thrusts. Instead we hear from Moscow that "the Russian armies have ally hundreds of youthful driv ers throughout the state, to com pete at Portland, Tuesday, for the coveted title of safe driving champion of Oregon. The con test is one of nearly 50 being held in cities throughout the country. The Ford Good Driv ers' league, formed by Edsel Ford, seeks to encourage good driving on the part of America's I young people The 24 state finalists, who were chosen by a nationally known board of judges on their showing in actual road tests as well as in written examinations, will be put through an exacting series of "on the spot" driving maneuvers in the forthcoming state competition. The boy and the girl rated best by the safety experts who are to act as judges will com pete in the national finals at Dearborn, Mich., August 21-25. No one is yet ready to believe the red army has mastered the new German technique of ad vance. 4 THE German purpose is to en- circle, demoralize and de stroy the Russian armies, as the French armies were encircled, demoralized and destroyed. The Russian job is to ESCAPE the encircling German pincers, either by fighting off the Ger mans or by withdrawing in rea sonably good order to the inter ior wastnesses of Russia where they can remain as a threat to Hitler's future. That is what the Chinese have so far been able to do to Japan. THE British today claim to be winning the battle of the At lantic with the help of long range planes and "corvettes." The corvette is a mass-production, awkward-looking ship, cap able of being turned out rapidly from the shipyards and said to be heavily enough armed to master a destroyer if need be. After a submarine has been spotted by the cruising planes, the corvettes do the dirty work of dropping depth bombs. THE flustered Japs announce today through their cabinet spokesman that "Japan would be placed in a very awkward and embarrassing position by U. S. aid to Russia." The spokesman acknowledges that Japan has no very clear knowledge of any such aid. Don't pay much attention to what Japan gays. More significant is the fact that she hasn't yet tackled the Russians in eastern Siberia. Sheriff Claude Anderson said the pair, captured at dawn Fri day in southeastern Montana by members of a 150-man posse, confessed 40 automobile thefts, nine robberies, three kidnap, ings and a burglnry while shut tling between Washington and Iowa three times. They kept a detailed diary of their exploits, he said. New York, June 28 The stock market finished a fairly successful week .with con siderable hesitancy today as war worries combined with a slump in recently buoyant com modities to put brakes on buy ing sentiment. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was unchanged at 41.7 but up .3 of a point on the week. Transfers of 139.550 shares compared with 125,200 a week ago, which was one of the smallest turnovers in a year. Emerging with moderate ad vances were Canada Dry, which edged into new high ground for the year; American Can, Penn sylvania, Douglas Aircraft Sperry, Goodyear, General Mo tors, Bethlehem Steel, American Telephone and Johns-Manville. On the losing side fraction ally were U. S. Steel, Western Union, Montgomery Ward, Glenn Martin, Phelps Dodge, Standard Oil (N. J.), Texas Corp., Santa Fe, N. Y. Central, Du Pont and Eastman Kodak. E Klamath Falls, June 28. (P) The city of Klamath Falls will file a brief against the civil aeronautics board's recommen dation opposing airline service here. City Attorney Dayton Van Vector said today. The United Airlines, which has applied for permit to serve Klamath Falls, has filed exceptions to the boards esti mates of costs and expected rev enue from the proposed serv ice. The brief, copies of which have been received by the city, states that the board's revenue estimate should be doubled and points out that part of the line's expenditures here would aid In military use of the Klamath air port.
