In the mountain fastnesses of
Jcbel ed Druz, the southern
Syrian region where British and
French troops have been fight
ing, lives hardy race of war
riors the Druses who have
plagued France during its man
date over the Levant states.
'Their unique religion com
bines teachings of Christ, Moses
and Mohammed with some pa
gan features," says a bulletin
from the National Geographic
society. "They received a tech
nically separate government for
Jebel ed Druz under the Syrian
administration but difficulties
arose over the extent of French
supervision and in 1925 a gen
eral Druse uprising developed.
Other dissident Syrians Joined
the revolt so that French rein
forcements had to be summoned
before it was checked.
"Slightly larger than the state
of Delaware, Jebel ed Druz is
comparatively Isolated terri
tory south of Damascus. On a
map it looks like a thumbprint
on southernmost Syria, which
surrounds it on three sides. To
the south is Trans-Jordan.
"The picturesque mountains,
some of which are extinct vol
canoes more than a mile high.
are covered with forests but in
the valleys and on the plateaus
rich lava soil produces good
crops of wheat, barley and other
grains. The region, in fact, Is
a potential granary for all Syria.
On the eastern slopes there is
ample pasture land where Be
douins tend flocks for the
Druses, Summers in the low

but In the higher altitudes cool
breezes modify the heat. Win
ters in the mountains often are
bitter cold, with snow some
times remaining at a consider
able depth for weeks.
"In Old Testament times the
land east of the River Jordan,
including some of the present
Jebel ed Druz, was known as
Bashan, famous for its oaks,
King Og dwelt in Salkhad,
where a modern village clusters
around the base of a small
volcano and a ruined fortress
fills the crater. The present
capital is Soueida (Es-Suweida),
whose 5,000 residents live on
the site of a Roman town which
stood on the summit and south
ern slope of a mountain ridge,

little-known structure of the
upper reaches of the earth's at
mosphere, the university
Texas has revealed.
The studies being made are of
shifting films of "invisible1
colors In the night sky. McDon
ald astromoners, headed by
T. Elvey, are examing through
special equipment the variations
in patterns of red, green ana
yellow films shifting across
the skies but invisible to the
naked eye.
Assisting Dr. Elvey are Poly-
dore Swings, noted Belgian sci
entist and visiting astronomer
at the University of Chicago,
and Walter Llnke, assistant

tempted to settle an argument
with a Luger type pistol. Resi

Bullets ripped through the
