Five itudents of the Grant high school of Portland rested here today after a long hike through the woods from Mount Jefferson to Crater Lake national park. The boys are .Frank Smith, George Walker, Dick Savinar, high school seniors, Larry Kra mer, a Junior, and Norman Vonborstel, who was graduated this month.. . The youths left Breitenbush lake, about eight miles north of Mt. Jefferson, on June 7 and hiked down the Skyline trail. They reached Crater lake in i 12 days, arriving here June 19. Along the way use was made of the shelters erected for such purpose at intervals on the Skyline trail. The boys said the trail was exceedingly wet and deep snow in the vicinity of the Sisters made it difficult to keep on the trail. The inclement weather made the hike harder than it would have been otherwise but did not dampen their enthu siasm, they declared. They singled out Paradise park near Mount Jefferson as a thing of beauty. . . The boys will return to Port land by motorcar. Boy King In London London, June 21. Those named on the commis sion were the Rev. Jesse W. Bunch, Forest Grove; F. A. Mag ruder, Oregon State college; Frank Bennett, Salem; Tom Klink, Newberg; the Rev. S. Darlow Johnson, Grants Pass; the Rev. Roy A. Fedje, Astoria, and George Childs, Bend. Reports were given as part of the closing business session of the conference. Appointments for the coming year will be read Sunday afternoon by Bishop Bruce Baxter. KILLER DEFIANT IN GAS CHAMBER Canon City, Colo., June 21. (JP) With the same philosophy of defiance he learned from 76 years of life on the western frontier, Mancos Jim hooted at death in Colorado's lethal gas chamber last night. A blood curdling Navajo In dian yell burst from his lips as the prison chaplain left the chamber. When the deadly fumes crept around him, he slipped his wrist from his leath er bonds and ripped the merci ful blindfold from his eyes. With great gulps he sucked in the gas. Then he gasped and died. He was convicted at Cortez, Colo., Dec. 8, 1939, of the mur der of Lynn Dean, 23, Mancos town marshal who was at tempting to arrest him for drunkenness. Madison, Wis., June 21. (IP) Joseph E. Davies, former United States ambassador to Russia, and Belgium, does not , believe Russia and Germany ; will fight. . ! "Russia and Germany will not fight because it is to the ; advantage of neither one to have war with the other," he I said at a press conference. Mor ris of Berkeley, Cal., who. came to Medford last week for a goitre operation, is improving nicely at Sacred Heart hospital. On Furlough Charles Devine, private with the 249th coast ar tillery at Fort Columbia. Chinook. Wash., is spending a 10-day furlough here at 516 Mary street. He was transferred in March to Fort Columbia from Fort Stevens, Wash. On Vacation Mr. and Mrs. Ray Harrison and two children of. 71 9 West Fourth street are spending a two weeks' vacation in Nebraska visiting relatives. They left here last Sunday by motor car and are expected to return next Sunday. Mr. Harri son is a salesman for Fluhrer's bakery. New Residence Tom Lounder applied at the city building in spector's office yesterday for a permit to construct a new resi dence and private garage ' at 1124 East 11th street at a stated cost of $3,000. American Fruit Growers, Inc., applied for a per mit to make an extension to a shed at 213 South Fir street at a stated cost of $500. Attend Convention Stanley G. Sherwood and Prentice Pet ty, clerks at Medford postoffice, and Kendrick Watson, a carrier, left by car Friday for Astoria to attend the annual state con vention of the National associa tion of Postoffice Clerks and the National association of Letter Carriers. The convention opened yesterday and was to be con tinued through today. To Portland Dr. and Mrs. Charles T. Sweeney will leave Monday for Portland where Mrs. Sweeney will visit their daugh ter. Mrs. R. C. Day, while the doctor continues on to Spokane for the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest Medical as sociation. Dr. Sweeney is an honorary member of the associa tion's governing board. They plan to return near the end of the week. At Monterey Lieut. Fred erick Leidel, former Medford re sident called to active army duty recently, is now stationed at the Presidio of Monterey , Cal., friends here were Informed yes terday. When ordered to active duty, Lieut. Leidel was in com mand of the Mount Shasta, Cal.. CCC camp. Before joining her husband at his new post, Mrs. Leidel, the former Viola Scher ,rer, visited at her home here, 120 Genessee street. At Airport Lieut. R. G. Goss stopped at Medford municipal airport yesterday afternoon to have his Curtiss pursuit plane re fueled. He was on a practice flight from Hamilton field, San Rafael, Cal., to Medford and re turn. Late arrivals Friday were Maj. J. C. Crosthwaite, Seattle, Wash., to Hamilton field, in a Curtiss pursuit plane, and Lieut. J. A. Peschka, Mather field. Mills, Cal., to Pearson field, Vancouver, Wash., In a North American basic trainer. Promoted Capt. George Spil ver of Eugene, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. F. W. Spilver, 520 South Hamilton street, has been prt: moted to major, cavalry reserve! according to an announcement of the war department. Ex-president of the Lane county chap ter of the Reserve Officers as sociation, Maj. Spilver will be subject to call at any time. During the past 19 years he has had active duty training at army posts throughout the country and at present is senior employment officer in the Eugene office of the Oregon state employment service. Upon his discharge from the army in 1918, Mr. Spil ver entered the University of Illinois where he completed four years of R. O. T. C. training. He received his commission as second lieutenant of cavalry from Gen. John J. Pershing who was honor guest and reviewing officer of the university brigade on the occasion. Recuperating Taylor Rowden of Thomas road, route 1, was re ported last night as recuperat ing nicely from the major opera tion he underwent in Sacred Heart hospital last Tuesday. He has now recovered sufficiently to receive visitors, friends stated. Visits Relatives John M. Sul livan of Butte. Mont., arrived here by plane Friday morning to visit his sister. Mrs. J. E. En route north Mr. Schoettler will attend a staff meeting In Salem of the state tax commission. They plan to visit relatives in Tacoma. Wash., before returning to Medford. Back Home Mr. and Mrs. Edward R. Walker and sons, Johnnie and Bobbie, returned to Eugene Saturday by motor after a two weeks' visit with Mrs. Walker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Gilstrap, 35 Geneva street. They were accompanied north by Phil Gilstrap of Salem, who has also been visiting at the home of his parents. Mrs. Phil Gil strap and son, Phil, plan to re main in Medford a little longer before returning home. Picnic Today Cantonment architect and engineering staff employes and their families will hold a picnic this afternoon on the site of the proposed army camp, purpose being to give the employes an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the site. The picnickers, numbering 62, are to assemble at the Med ford armory at 3 p. m. and travel from there to the camp site in their own cars. A hike will be made over parts of the site and a picnic supper will be served near Bybee bridge. Myron Hunt, architect In charge, and Harold I. Wood, head of the engineer ing staff, and their wives will attend. To Testify Raymond R. Reter, head of the fruit packing company bearing his name and prominent in a number of west coast pear organizations, left by United Matnliner yesterday af ternoon for Washington, D. C, to testify before the committee for reciprocity information in the matter of the proposed Argentine trade pact. Representing the Medford district pear industry, Mr! Reter will submit briefs and give oral testimony on restrict ing the importation of Argen tine pears. His testimony will pertain to the pear industry of the entire Pacific coast. It was expected that Mr. Reter would be gone about 10 days. ' Appointed Paul W. Knaupp, Portland, state director of the State Farm Mutual Auto, Life and Fire Insurance companies of Bloomington, HI., yesterday an nounced appointment of Fred Lumm, Sr., as the company's dis trict representative for Jackson and Josephine counties. With his wife and sons. Fred, Jr., and Robert, Mr. Lumm has moved from Portland to Medford and has taken residence at 710 South Oakdale avenue. Standard of 1105 West Main street returned home by train yesterday morning after spend ing two weeks with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Standard, and her brother and sister-in-law. She attended the state conven tion of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, June 38, 19 and 20, and was elected senior vice president of the or ganization. ...
