The annual swimming ind 1 i to .tQl'inO Mmmidn tnnnGnpwl by the Jackson County Red I Cross will oprn July 7 according to a report given at the Red Cross executive board monthly luncheon meeting held yester day at Hotel Medford. Classes will be held two weeks in Medford and two weeks in Ashland under an instructor from Red Cross headquarters with the assistance of Miss Mar jorie Kelly. Miss Frances Arn spiger will be Jackson county delegate to the First Aid aquatic school held June IS to 25 at Four Seasons lodge, Beaver Lake, Issaquah, Wash. C. C. Haggard, recently ap pointed chairman for first aid in Jackson county, has organ ized several first aid classes. One at Gold Hill has 33 enrolled and is under the direction of J. B. Miehan meeting Mondays and Thursdays at the city hall. The standard course includes 30 hours of instruction and it Is necessary for students to attend 80 per cent of the schedule in order to receive their certifi cates. Another class is held at Rogue River, the report stated. Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter re ported on the Home Service committee which will meet at the Red Cross rooms tomorrow at 1:15 p. m. This committee's activities include contact rela tions between men In service and their families. Some 300 Medford Elks and their guests, undaunted by a fine drizzle of rain that fell late in the afternoon, but vanished during the evening, gathered on the banks of the Rogue River yesterday and last night to enjoy their annual picnic. Featuring the affair was the delicious dinner of barbecued meat and Italian spaghetti pre pared by Shy Morthland and Tony Boitano, and 18 rounds of fighting by CCC mitt-slingers The picnic, starting during the afternoon, lasted into the small hours of the morning and it was the consensus that it was one of the best yet held. Free beer was Served with the dinner, the Elks band blared forth with several snappy numbers, and there were various and sundry games for additional entertainment. Although there were no knockouts on the fight program. the cheering Elks got their money's worth of slam-banp scrapping. Sepulveda, 151. of Camp Bly, grabbed a hairline decision from Taylor, 147, of Camp Seiad, in the main event Johnson, 147, of Seiad. and O'Banion, 1434 of Williams Creek, battled to the only draw of the evening in the next-to-last fracas on the program. Other results: Oliver. 132, Lava Beds outpointed Driggers. 131, Bly: Elliott. 123, Lava Beds. outpointed Madison, 125. Hat Creek: Davis. 121, Steamboat. outpointed Cumbie. 124. Seiad: Stewart, 108, Lava Beds, out pointed Henderson, 115, Bly. All six bouts, of three rounds each, were refereed by Fred Erickson. with E. C. (Jerry) Jerome doing the announcing. Base paving of the cross run way of Medford municipal air- j port from the east end to the main runway was begun today.' The strip to be paved is 150 feet wide and 1350 feet long. Base paving of the main run way for its entire length of 5500 feet and half of the 200 foot width to be paved was com pleted yesterday. The paved sec tion of the main runway will be ready for use in a week or so, Fred W. Scheffel, city superin tendent said. The city yesterday sent for review to the civil aeronautics administration's office in Seat tle, Wash., plans for the con struction of parallel runways at the airport, Mr. Scheffel said. This is another phase in the "ul timate development" plan for the airport.
