GIVE DEFENSES HARDER STEEL Los Angeles, (U.R) The metal Industry is keeping pace with the demands of the national de fense program by perfecting new and better methods of fab ricating the steel used In the manufacture of airplanes, tanks, battleships and guns. Research scientists have de veloped superior processes for hardening the surfaces of steel plates used in war armament and have discovered substitute alloys which are proving more efficient than metals previously used in war machinery. William H. Eisenman, secre tary of the American Society for Metals, disclosed that the great majority of the nation's leading metallurgists have been drafted to work on the perfec tion of new steel fabricating methods. Eisenman said that highly sat . lsfactory progress has been made in the attempt to Improve metal fabricating. Eisenman revealed that "shot blasting," formerly used only to harden surfaces of large springs in automobiles and locomotives, , now is being applied to the smaller springs of motors in air craft and other military trans portation units. . "The shot blast bombards the metal parts with tiny steel balls," he said. "These hammer the surface to a hard, smooth finish which possesses great resi liency." Piquant Banco (for Vegetables) i 4 tablespoons mayonnaise 4 teaspoon minced onions 1 tsbleapoon minced sweet pickles t olives, finely chopped K teaspoon trsted lemon rind 1 tesspoon lemon Jules 1 tsbleapoon butter Mix Ingredients and blend Into hot cooked vegetables. Fresh Fruit, Flavored with (traps Jules 1 cup cubed peacbea 1 cup cubed pears 1 cup cubed oranges 5 tablespoons granulated sugar Va cup grape Jules Mis and chill Ingredients and serve la glass dishes.
