Early returns from a nation
wide farmer referendum today
gave a favorable margin for an
agriculture department proposal
to establish rigid marketing
quotas on this year's wheat
crop.
First reports from Illinois,
Indiana, Maryland, Tennessee
and South Dakota gave 1,973
votes for and 556 votes against
the control program. This was
a favorable majority of 78 per
cent Approval by at least two
thirds of those voting was re
quired.
Incomplete returns from 18
of the 37 states in which polls
were established gave 39,089
votes for and 18,573 votes
against quotas. This was a fav
orable margin of 68 percent.
Agriculture department of
ficials had predicted that at
least 75 percent of the bread
grain growers would vote for
quotas.
Thirty million people have
come here from foreign lands
to gain liberty and security
since our constitution was
adopted in 1787. Today life in

The United Service Organiza
tions for National Defense, Inc.,
has been incorporated as a non
profit agency by the federation
of the following six national or
ganizations: the YJrt.C.A.. the
Y.W.C.A, the National Catholic
Community Service, the Jewish
Welfare Board, the Salvation
Army and the National Travel

Dewey Is active chairman, and
38 governors. Including Gover

chairmen in their respective
states. Oregon's quota is $89,-
000.
According to press release
from Oregon state headquortres
of the U. S. O., it Is proposed
that the clubhouses will be erect
ed by government funds In com
munlties most frequented by
men from adjacent army camps
and naval training bases. These
building will be leaned to the
United Service Organizations
under whose direction the six
participating agencies will co

and program. It Is for this pnrt
of the program that the u. S. O.
will launch its national drive
to raise $10,765,000.
Operation, of the clubhouses
will provide contacts between
soldiers and sailors and people
of the community, provisions
for religious worship, counsel
and guidance on personal prob

and cultural services. Informa
tion service, transient aid to sol
diers and sailors on leave and
to visiting relatives and friends.
'The army, according to the
press release, "has provided fa
cilities for religious worship,
entertainment, social recreation
and education within the camps
themselves. The greatest leis
ure time problem, however, does
not lie within the military res
ervations but In the adjacent
communities. Many of these are
small and sometimes find them
selves with a number equal or
greater than their entire popu
lation, spending the evening
when off duty walking the
streets, seeking some kind of
diversion."
Mr. Moffat explained at Sat
urday's committee meeting that
Jackson county's quota of $1500
did not represent the amount
that would be needed here in
rase the proposed army canton
ment is constructed and the
government builds a clubhouse
In Medford to take care of the
soldiers who will be stationed
at the cantonment. Jackaon
county'i money, he said, would
become a part of the national
fund of $10,763,000, and if
clubhouse Is built here the nec
essary money for its operation
would be forthcoming from the
national fund. It would probab
ly far exceed $1,500, be stated.
