Errol Flynn Has Modern Role in "Footsteps in the Dark" at Craterian
MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY. JUNE 1. 1941
MYSTERY STORY
WRITER FORCED
TO CLEAR SELF
Errol Flynn, dashing star of
"Robin Hood", "The Sea Hawk"
and "Santa Fe Trail", now has
his first modern screen role in
recent years in the exciting comedy-mystery.
"Footsteps in the
Dark", opening a three day run
today at the Craterian theatre.
Unusually outstanding is the
new March of Time which la to
be shown on the same program,
presenting "Men of the F-BJ.
1941", and showing how the
agents of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation are busy investi
gating espionage and sabotage
during these troubled times.
In "Footsteps in the Dark",
Flynn is a mystery story writer
who likes to get his material
first hand. He gets it all right,
but buffeted about by his wife
on one side and his mother-in-law
on the other, he finds that
the least of his troubles is be
ing accused of murdering a
beautiful blonde.
Lovely Brenda Marshall plays
the role of Flynn's wife and,
with the aid of her suspicious
mother, Lucile Watson, succeeds
in making a mountain out of a
mystery. The police force have
their doubts about things too,
which doesn't help matters
when Errol tries to clear him
self. Included in the outstanding
cast are Ralph Bellamy, Lee
Patrick, Alan Hale, Allen Jenk
ins, Grant Mitchell and Roscoe
Karns.
Gay Family Comedy
'Keeping Company'
Opening at Rialto
The trials and tribulations of
young newlyweds, and particu
larly the danger of their first
quarrel, becomes the subject for
a gay, romantic family comedy
in "Keeping Company", today
and tomorrow only at the Rialto
Theatre. The cast rivals that of
the famous Hardy Family, and
according to advance reports,
the comedy situations and plot
is equally as hilarious as the
many "scrapes" the Hardys get
themselves into. .. .. - -
The opening sequence of
"Keeping Company" has the
Thomas family (little sister,
brother, mother and dad) trying
to marry off big sister to the
"catch" of the town. They suc
ceed and from then on their
troubles really start as they play
nursemaid, kangaroo court and
doctor to the lucky pair.
Ann Rutherford and John
Shelton, two of the outstanding
young players of the screen, and
both rated as strong probablli-J
ties for future stardom, appear j
as the youthful bride and '
groom. Miss Rutherford has
heretofore played Andy Hardy's
favorite girl-friend In the Hardy
series.
Teamed are Frank Morgan
and Irene Rich, as Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas, the mother and father
of Ann Rutherford. Thirteen-year-old
Virginia Wiedler, who
Is considered a star at the movie
capital, plays the impish young
sister who keeps the newlyweds
on a veritable keg of dynamite.
The story, in brief, is that of
a boy and girl and their mar
riage. After much plotting on
the part of the girl's father and
kid sister, the wedding takes
place. Then trouble appears In
the person of the boy's ex
sweetheart. She persists In
hounding him and attention to

the town's gossipers. Her Jeal
ousy gets the best of her and
she returns to her parent's home
but with expert and wholesale
plotting on the part of her sly
old dad and brat of a sister, they
are pulled through their big
crisis.
