Storm-Felled Sequoia in 'California National Park ' Br Robert Fahs - UP Staff Correspondent ' Sequoia National Park, Cal. U.K When the mow hai melt ed early this lummer from the 7.000-foot level of Sequoia na tional park, botanists and natur alists will try to determine what caused the death of one of the oldest living things. ' The experts will come here to Inspect a fallen giant Sequoia tree which crashed during a storm in February. , An effort will be made to de termine the age of the tree. The tree, a majestic Sequoia Glgantea, was 275 feet high and 27 feet In diameter at the base. The tree stood in the Giant For est near winter headquarters of Sequoia park, but it was not pamed. Growing Area Confined - Botanists, naturalists and tree experts generally are anxious to learn more about the Sequoia Gigantea, which la found only In a limited area of the Sierra Nevada mountains. - The falling of one of the ma jestic trees, which a U. S. fores try department survey showed was the most popular tree In America and therefore made the Sequoia the official tree of the United States, Is considered highly unusual and much Inter est is attached to the "post mor tems". . In the past several years, a few Sequoias have fallen not mora than a dozen and none as large as the one that crashed last winter but until a few years ago none of the trees had been known to fall over a long period of time. Oldest Living Things Sequoias are the oldest living things on earth and are estimat ed to be 5,000 years old, having started to grow hundreds 'of years before Christ was born. ' Sequoias are extremely dif ficult to kill since they resist fire and are not known to be affected by Insect pests. The Wood, consequently, lasts almost indefinitely, even after a tree has fallen, and the trunks of giants that fell centuries ago till may be seen. The tree that fell this winter smashed the summer cabin of E. T. Scoycn, superintendent of Sequoia park. After the snow has melted and the debris has been cleaned up, the tree experts will Inspect the fallen giant in an effort to add new facts to the lore of the world's oldest living things. Reinartz said here that recent experiments with an! mals have shown that "repeated periods of anoxia may produce a picture of considerable dam age to the brain." Ha said that pilots have ob served that sustained flight at high altitudes appears to short en the periods during which they are able to preserve their faculties without a full supply of oxygen. Steadily Increasing speeds of war planes and the heights at which modern high-speed man euvering Is carried, said Col. Reinartz, place an even greater strain on pilots. New methods of administer ing oxygen at great altitudes, plus specialized physical exam inations are doing much to elim inate permanent danger to mili tary pilots, he said.
