The enclosed article in Life (issue May 16), written by Harry Scherman. Dointa out the con tradiction In the fiscal policy of the administration, in again making this request of congress, and its deleterious effect upon the long-term credit of the gov ernment. As you may know, this com mittee has repeatedly opposed this executive power to devalue; and it has recently been joined in this position by all the re sponsible officials of the fed eral reserve system, in their Joint report to congress on Jan uary 1 last. Vigorous protest, by those who recognize the crucial na ture of this Issue, may be ef fectual at this moment. From out talks with senators and representatives, we can assure you that most of them are eager to obtain the views of those who have given thought to this matter. The most promising action at this time would be letters from your readers, expressing their views on renewing this grant of executive power. Such letters should be sent to the congress men and the senators represent ing your state and to the Sen ate Committee on Banking and Currency, Senate Office Build ing, Washington, D. C. Walter E.
