Sparkling Romance Ac

Reunited In "Penny Sere
nade. Irene Dunne and Cary
Grant return to the Craterian
theatre screen today for three
days. Vivid, absorbing story of
an errant newspaperman and his
wife. Columbia's "Penny Sere
nade" is based upon .Martha
Cheavens' magazine novel, and
enacted by a stellar cast which
includes Beulah Bondi and
Edgar Buchanan.
In "Penny Serenade," Grant
appears as a young newspaper
man who meets and is immedi
ately attracted to a music store
salesgirl, portrayed by Miss
Dunne, who as definitely falls
in love with the reporter. They
are married, one New Year's
Eve, half an hour before he
must leave for Tokyo on a new
assignment. Three months later,
the girl Joins her husband.
Grant's casual attitude towards
responsibilities invites a barrier
between the two. The earth
quake, the loss of the baby they
had been expecting and the
knowledge that they can never
have a child of their own, cre
ate further problems.
Returned to America, and set
tled down as the proud editor
of a small country newspaper,
Grant attempts to make his wife
happy. But he succeeds only
when they adopt a baby girl;

Jane Withers With
Jackie Cooper Top
Cast of Rialto Hit
Two of the screen's most popu
lar young stars, Jane Withers
and Jackie Cooper, are co-starred
in "Her First Beau," which opens
for today and tomorrow only at
the Rialto theatre. Lesser play
ers in this comedy of youthful
antics and romantics include
Edith Fellows, Josephine Hutch
inson, William Tracy, Martha
O'Driscoll and Edgar Buchanan.
Jane appears in the comedy,
which has been hailed as the last
word in gay and heart-warming
fun, as a young lady, going on
16, who suddenly discovers ro
mance. At a time when she is
torn between a strong urge to
remain a kid and go fishing and
an equally powerful desire to
grow up quickly so she can be
a beautiful siren, the youngster
falls in love.
Young Cooper falls Into the
category of being the beau who
attracts Miss Withers most and
in a rib-tickling race for her
affections comes out the win
ner, but not without those mo
ments of heart-break and date
ditching that every young boy
and girls goes through at the
tender age of 16.
The "tragedies" of youth, the
happiness and triumphs and
doubts, are said to be amusingly
"Rhythm on the Range," the
most popular picture of 1936,
is the "old favorite" booked by
the Rialto theatre to play Tues
day, Wednesday and Thursday
for their "Rialto Re-Issue Days"
change. Starring Bing Crosby.
Bob Burns, Martha Raye and
Frances Farmer, "Rhythm on
the Range" introduced five
songs that are still favorites
among them are: "Empty Sad
dles," "I'm An Old Cowhand
from the Rio Grande," "I Can't
Escape from You," and "The
House that Jack Built for Jill."
"Rhythm on the Range" is the
picture that gave the screen Bob
Burns and Martha Raye.
shown in "Her First Beau," so
that the film emerges is grand
entertainment for the whole fam.
ily.
An added short subject titled
"The Seeing Eye," plays on the
program with "Her First Beau."
The short film tells the story of
the dogs who act as "eyes" for
the blind. How the dogs are
trained, the breed and the dis
tribution are highlights of the
human Interest film.
