FAMILY KEEPS
Detroit. (U.R) Arthur 3.
Strong, 79, whose uncle engaged
Abraham Lincoln In a target
match to prove superiority of
his repeating rifle which later
was credited with aiding the
Union army, has followed the
family tradition.
Strong., who worked with his
uncle, Christopher M- Spencer
until his death several years
ago, has submitted a new de
vice to Canadian officials for
straightening rifle barrels and
stepping up light arms produc
tion. "My uncle often used to tell
me of his target match with
Lincoln." he said. "He invent
ed the first lever action repeater
and went to Washington to sell
It to the Union army, Lincoln
was interested in the new gun
because he waa quite a marks
man himself. They set up tar
gets on the banks of the Po
tomac river and shot it out. My
uncle won the match but Lin
coln laughed it off. He said my
uncle was a younger man."
Cen. Joseph Hooker, Strong
said, credited the gun with a
large share of the success of
lbs Union army.

FEW EVER SEE
Washington. (UP) Although
lovers and poets often have
noted the song of the whlppor
will, the bird itself has come
almost as near to achieving
complete Invisibility as any
living creature.
The whipporwil! Is masterful
ly camouflaged, according to
Dr. Winsor M. Tyler in a Smith
sonian Institution bulletin, and
it is not "one person in a hun
dred" who has ever seen one.
It Is a bird of the "dusk and the
dark," migrating between Flor
ida and the northwestern cli
mates and traveling entirely by
night, he said.
