Life doea begin at 40 ind Lefty Grove, the (aunt ghost with a magnificent past and doubtful future, hai returned to haunt the trembling Ameri can league as proof. Old Mose maneuvered through 13 innings yesterday to conquer the Detroit Tigers 6-3 and cast the chaotic pennant race Into greater confusion with Cleve land again in front. Yesterday Grove was up against the leading pitcher of the league, Buck Newsom, win ner of 18 games against three losses, and a gallant team that was on the hot end of a five- same winning streak and in first place in the league. Greenbtrg Gets 30th. Grove gave up three hits, one of them Hank Greenberg s 30th homerun, for three tallies In the first inning. But after that he allowed only one run In the next ten Innings and was never behind after his teammates tied up the score at 3-all. He stopped Rudy York, hero of a couple of Detroit's recent triumphs. With the bases load ed and the score tied in the ninth he forced the slugger to ground to short for the third out, and in both the 11th and 13th la nings he fanned York for the third out. His victory lifted the Red Sox to within four games of the lead. The Indians and Yankees were scheduled for a doubleheader today with Detroit tackling the Red Sox in a single game. Then tomorrow the clubs switch part ners. t Sox Subdued. In the other American league action yesterday the Washing ton Senators subdued the Chi cago White Sox 3-2, and the Philadelphia Athletics whipped the St. Louis Browns fl-4 In a night game- The only National league games that escaped the rain were In a doubleheader that Pittsburgh captured from the Phillies. 11-3 and 11-1. CRATERIAK Honking of geese as they wing their way through Oregon, marking the beginning of the southern migration of these birds, has served to bring sports men to the realization that the annual hunting season la near at hand, it was pointed out In a news release from the Oregon state game commission today. In Just about a week, Septem ber 20, the deer season opens. Shortly thereafter, on Septem ber 29, the antelope season is on and on November 1, the elk sea son, both for bull and cow elk, will be officially open. A new regulation is In effect on blacktail deer reduction In the bag limit to one deer. There will be no doe season this year and the bag limit on mule deer continues at one deer. The sea son extends from September 20 to October 23, both dates inclu sive. Open territory for antelope In cludes parts of Lake, Malheur and Harney counties. The season for these fleet-footed animals ex tends from September 29 to Oc tober 6, both dates inclusive. Special tags have been author ized by the game commission and a limited supply is still available. Any sportsman wish ing to go antelope hunting should obtain his tag by commu nicating with the Portland office of the commission at once. Elk season opens November 1 and extends to the 10th, both dates inclusive. Bull elk with horns may be shot in Union, Umatilla, Grant, Morrow, Baker and that part of Wallowa county north of baseline and west of the Imnaha river. The cow elk terri tory lies within the bull elk territory but does not embrace the entire territory. Hunters should refer to the official hunt ing synopsis for the exact boun daries. Decision of the game commis sion to throw open a number of game reserves for deer hunting has made new deer hunting grounds that will accommodate many sportsmen. Last year the commission opened O c h o c o, Myrtle Park and Canyon Creek in Grant county and these three reserves will again be open this year. In addition, the following game refuges are also open to deer hunting: Mule deer, in southern Klamath and Lake counties: Steen mountain, in southeast Harney county; Mt. Emily, on boundary of Umatilla and Union counties and that part of the Warner game refuge lying outside of the Heart Mountain antelope reserve in southeast Lake counties. In Canyon Creek refuge, only bow and arrow hunting will be permitted from the opening of the deer season until October 3.
