Dinsons Hara Mr. and Mrs. Pete Denson arrived in Medford this noon to spend several days visiting at the Hotel Medford. Mr. Denson formerly managed the hotel and now owns the Johnson hotel in Visalia, Cal. Staff Member Bernard A. - Johnson, commander of Camp Orleans, Cal., has been trans ferred to staff duty at Med ford CCC district headquarters. He had assumed his new duties today. Minor Accident C 1 i f f o r d Klein of Murphy and Joseph A. Skeeters of Ashland drove cars involved in an accident on the Pacific highway three miles north of Ashland Thursday morning, according to a report on file here today, b Building Permit J. L. Cook ' of 1205 East Main street, ap plied at the city building in spector's office yesterday for a permit to demolish a barn and build a garage at a stated cost of $50. Flue Fire No damage was done by a flue fire at 12:57 this afternoon in the residence of Clarence Hunt, 1297 Sunset venue. The fire department's chemical crew stood by while the chimney soot burned itself out. Posts Bail Ward B. White, 88, posted $5 bail yesterday and will appear in city court Sat urday morning on a charge of drunkenness. White, city police stated, was arrested in a local rooming house after setting his bed on fire with a cigarette. From Saaiila Mr. and Mrs. Lew Gay of Seattle are guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gay, 523 North River aide avenue. The visitors ar- ; rived by motorcar last evening and planned to remain over the y 'week-end. Lew and Charles Gay are brothers. - Grass Fire The fire depart ment's chemical crew was call ed at 10:52 a. m. today to put out a grass fire behind the resi dence of Frank Wainwright, 613 East Eighth street. The grass was ignited by hot ashes dump ed in the yard, firemen re ported. No damage was done. Te ..Lire .Here Mrs. Chris Schempp and daughter arrived in Medford this morning from Modesto, Cal., to join Mr. Schempp and the Schempps' other daughter in making their home here- in the near future. Mr. Schempp recently purchased the Huber Packing company here. The family is staying at the Hotel Holland. To Fly Planes Word has been received here that Denton Clark and Silas King, former - Medford resident now connect ed with the Webb-Kline air serv ice at Boise, Idaho, have left for Lock Haven, Pa., to fly two planes back to the Art Whitaker flying service in Portland. Arrives Htra Miss SUrla fc Parvin arrived in Medford yes terday from Klamath Falls to assume the position of English teacher at the Medford high School Monday. Miss Parvin has been teaching in the Red mond high school. She will re place Mrs. Glenna Mae Early, resigned English teacher who has moved from the city. Miss Parvin is residing in the Hotel Holland. Plane Passengers Mrs. Nion Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. N. Smith and Miss M. Craig left by United Mainliner this forenoon for San Francisco. F. Harrigan left for Portland early this morning. Mrs. F. G. Christensen departed for Oakland on the midnight Mainliner. H. L. Niles Irft for Portland last night. H. W. Wagner and A. C. Chargers arrived from Portland last eve ning. Complete Visit Harold and Joe Wagstaff of San Francisco plan to return home by motor car tomorrow after visiting here with their friend. Melton H. Cotton, 1260 Sunset avenue The brothers spent some time fishing on the Klamath river and caught a 15-pound salmon which they sent home packed in ice. Both said they liked southern Oregon immensely. Mr. Cotton also resides in San Francisco but be has been here for some time on mining oper ations. FIRS! 10 RECEIVE FLYING LICENSE Mrs. Thomas A. Culbertson, Jr., (nee Florence Scherrer) to day held the distinction of being the first Medford girl to procure a private pilot's certificate through a course of study car ried out entirely at the local air port. After months of studious work, Mrs. Culbertson took and passed her written and flight ex aminations yesterday and was certified by Rupert Herr, civil aeronautics authority inspector. Mrs. Culbertson's husband is su perintendent of the airport and flight instructor in the govern ment's civilian pilot training pro gram which is being carried on here through the Southern Ore gon College of Education. Mrs. Culbertson was a private student and not enrolled in the college class. Additional members of the col lege class passed their flight ex aminations yesterday, making a total of 13 out of the class of 29 to pass thus far. Those passing the flight tests are to taKe tneir written examinations in the near future and the remaining 18 are to take their flight examinations soon. The government students who have passed their flight tests are Robert E. Young, Rupert James Henry and Ray K. Wolfe, Med ford; Martin Luther, 3rd, Talent; Kathryn J. Bergstrom, Marilyn O. Christlieb, Bruce E. DeMers, James Hal McNair, William B. Westfall, Joseph F. King and Elmer V. Ayres, Ashland; Lester Toler, Grants Pass, and Stewart W. Groesbeck, Klamath Falls. Max Guiley, ground instructor at the college, passed an exami nation for a 2-S rating which permits him to pilot planes of the Fairchild class. 73, Bertha Allen, 73, a resident of Medford all her life until mov ing to Bakersfield, Calif-, 20 years ago, passed away there Tuesday afternoon. Besides her husband, she leaves one brother, Ernest Lang ley of Jacksonville. The remains are being accom panied to Medford by her hus band and a brief service will be conducted at the grave in the Medford I.O.O.F. cemetery by Dr. Sherman L. Divine at 11:30 a. m. Saturday. FOR NEW PARTY The county clerks' office is checking the names on petitions circulated in Jackson county, proposing formation of a new political party in Oregon to be known as the "socialist-labor party." It might be termed a 1940 adaptation of the Old Oregon T r a i 1 t h I s adventure-spiced drama of a young American and two immigrants, refugees from the bitter strife of war torn Europe, who join forces on their trek to Oregon in search of happiness. Charles Coburn is the third member of the trio. "The Mummy's Han d." a "spook-thriller," featuring Dick Foran, Peggy Moran and Eduardo Ciannelli, will be the companion feature.
