Sb 1 Mr. Hunt cousin. j Simmons, Hanen Vie In Title Golf Match FINALS REACHED BY SENSATIONAL WINS YESTERDAY Simmons Beats Bentley, 1 Up On 20th Hanen Tips Leal Eddie Shoots 66 Medford'a young Eddie Sim mons today stood on the thres hold of his fifth Southern Oregon-Northern California golf tournament championship, but I barring his path to that unprece dented honor was one of the most capable out-of-town shot makers ever to compete tn this section's blue ribbon golf clas sic 19-year-old Dick Hanen of Marshfield, the University of Oregon freshman star. They were clashing in the 36-hole finals today and not one of the hundreds of close tourna ment observers were brave enough to venture a prediction as to the ultimate winner, so closely matched did they ap pear. They played their first 18 holes this morning, and their afternoon round was slated to start at 1:30. Record Neared Simmons, champion the past two years, blasted his way into the finals with two sensational I victories In the quarter-finals and semi-finals yesterday. Sun-! day morning he eliminated Medford's Leland Clark, 4 up, in a match that saw him fire an incredible medal score of 66, four under par and only one stroke above the long-tee courso record of 65, held by Medford's Bob Hammond. Sun day afternoon he defeated Ash land's Hubert B. Bentley, 1937 champion, 1 up on the 20th, In probably the most thrilling struggle of the tournament, Hanen, finalist in the Wash ington State amateur this sum mer, scored a 4 up quarter-final victory over Medford's Jack Creager, and then hurdled Eu genes Don Leal, 2 up, In a great semi-final contest Sunday afternoon. The Simmons-Bentley match ended on the 20th green when Bentley, who had come from behind to square the match on the 17th, missed two and a half foot putt for a par four and conceded a aix-incher to Eddie. They had halved the 19th and 18th. Bent Never Leads The Ashland clubber was never In the lead against Sim mons, but neither was he ever out of the contest, which was all square seven times. Going into the 15th Simmons was two up, thanks to a remarkable 50 foot approach to within six inches of the cup on the 13th. But on the 15th Eddie's drive found a trap and he took a five to Bentley'a par four to reduce his lead to one up. Then, on the 17th, Simmons' deadly putter failed him on a 16-lncher while Bentley was taking a par four, and the match was all square. On the 18th Simmons canned a difficult six foot putt to deadlock the match as both were one over par fours. Simmons was one under par on the front nine, with 35, as ha blrdled the second and ninth and went one over on the seventh. Bentley carded a par-38 on the first nine, a 20- foot putt on number four feat uring his excellent performance, They halved the first in par fours and Simmons' birdie three gave him a one-up lead on the second. It was square again on the third as Bentley shot a birdie three, and after halving the fourth in par threes Sim mons went one up again with a four to Bentley'a five on the fifth. They halved the sixth In par fives, but Bentley again squared it with a par four on the seventh. Simmons won the eighth with a par three to go one up, and they halved the ninth. Old Stag Road Simmons came up with his great 50-yard approach dead to the pin to birdie the hole and go two up. They paired the 14th and Bentley won the 15th to reduce Ed's lead to one hole. They halved the 16th and the struggle was deadlocked when Eddie failed to drop his 16-inch putt on the 17th. Simmons shot a 36. two over par, on the back nine, while Bentley carded a medal 35, one over regulation figures. The winner's 18-hole medal tally was 71, one over, whila Bent ley shot an identical score. Simmons' 66 against Clark la the quarter-finals was the beat score ever recorded In the tour ney, and It had to be just about that good to beat Leland. Clark, himself, medaled a 70, even par. but Simmons was simply un beatable. Eddie collected five birdies and three pars on the DacK nine. Simmons' 4-up victory and 66 medal score In his match with Clark was all the more remarkable because the 1939 champion went to the first tee with only two and a half hour sleep. Because of the Labor day exodus, he couldn't get anybody to work for him at his Union Oil company service station, so he did the trick himself from 6:00 p. m. Saturday to 6:00 a. m. Sunday, and all that after playing two tough 18-hole matches Saturday! It was a tough match for Clark to lose, but at that ha had a chance on the second nine when he halved the 10th and was only two down. On the 11th Simmons pulled a long one into cars parked behind the club house and they had to move the machines to let Eddie see daylight to the i green. Ed cut loose and the ball sailed like a rifle shot dead to the pin. That put him three up and the match was really over, although Clark, who was de feated by Simmons last year in a sensational title match, didn't quit until he was mathematical ly eliminated on the 13th green. Even closer than the Simmons-Bentley . match waa the Hanen-Leal semi-final struggle. It was square eight times and the lead changed hands twice. All square on the 13th, the youthful Marshfield shotmaker blrdied the 16th with a three, and after halving the 17th, ended the match on the 18th with a par four. Hanea Pressed . Hanen and Leal both carded 39 s on the front nine. Hanen won the first hole with a par four, but Leal squared tt with a birdie three on the second. Hanen went one up with a par four on the third, and after halving the fourth Increased his lead to two up a Leal took a two-over-par aix on the fifth. Leal then won the next three) holes to take the lead for the) first time. He paired the sixth, seventh and eighth as Hanea game momentarily collapse but the latter blrdied the nlr with a four to sauara the mat as they started the back nil Leal went Into the lead aga, , on the low witn a Driuu birdie two, but Hanen fired birdie on the 11th to deadlock the tilt once more. They halved the 12th In par threes, then Leal parred the 13th to go on up. That was his last time in the drivers seat, for Hanen paired the 14th to square the match, went one up on the 16th and ended tt on the 18th. Hanen'a 18-hole medal was 73, Leal'a was 75. Leal had won his way Into the semi-finals by beating Med ford's Bob Hammond in the quarter-finals, 1 up on the 18th. Bentley, in reaching the semi finals, eliminated Ray Babb of Corvallis in the morning, I and 1. Bentley, In defeating Ray Babb in the quarter-finals, cam up with the tournament's moat spectacularly-played hole.
