Gold Hill. Aug. 31. Spl Crowds in holiday mood today enjoyed the eighth annual northwest Jackson county fair put on by this small but enter prising city. The prediction of William Howes, general chairman of the fair board, that the eighth an nual fair would be "bigger and better" actually came true. The crowds were bigger, the livestock exhibits were bigger, there were 1.400 exhibits all told as against 750 last year. the free barbecue was bigger and everyone agreed that every' thing was better! Coming at the end of an cx citing day, a dance tonight brought the fair to a close. The dance, in the spacious Gold Hill pavilion, was to continue well into Sunday morning. Throng At Barbecue Close to 3,000 persons were treated to the fair's famous free barbecue dinner on the soft, green lawns of the school house on the sloping hill overlooking the city. The tantalizing aroma wafting from the barbecue pits all afternoon whetted appetites so that the thousands of visitors needed no coaxing to accept generous helpings. ! Fires in two barbecue pits ; were laid at 4:00 a. m. and the beef was started cooking at j 6:00. From then on F. H. Pink-; erton and Mrs. Jeanette Greer ; spent their time cooking the1 big meal. And it was big: 700 ; pounds of the finest steer Deei, 200 pounds of potatoes, 25 gal lons of brown gravy, and 50 gallons of coffee, to say noth ing of large quantities of but ter, cheese, pickles, cream ana other incidentals. j Over all this joyous activity reigned with majestic poise and regal generosity Queen Ina I, Miss Ina Pearl Lucas of Sams Valley Grange, Assisting Queen Ina were Princesses Edith Howes, Gold Hill Grange, Vir ginia Centers, Gold Hill Garden club, Charlotte Carter, Live Oak Grange, and Geneva Moore, Wimer Grange. Gies Ferrent Speech Crowning of the queen was held during the morning par ade that started activities for the day. The coronation address was given by Dennis McGuire, school superintendent. After the coronation Mayor R. G. Wigle turned over the emblematic key of the city to General Chair man Howes. In a brief but fer vent acceptance speech, Mr. Howes pointed to the destruc tion, famine and suffering In Europe, emphasized the "boun teous productivity of our land as shown by the fine exhibits at our fair" and declared that "we should all be thankful that we live in this glorious nation, the best country in the world." Like Oak, Gold Hill and Sams Valley Granges again had booths which the Judges de scribed as excellent. This year, however, the booths were not classified but equal prizes were awarded to all meeting speci fied minimum requirements. Fowler Is Judge Exhibits showed a wide range of subject matter and much Interest was shown in them throughout the day. R. G. Fowler, Jackson coun ty agent, and O. K. Beals, Jose phine county agent, were judges of livestock. Mr. Fowler also took part in other judging. A full afternoon of sports, 'JUNGLE TOM IS T 1 War Calendar Hr are some photographic views of the eighth annual northwest Jackson county fair at Gold Hill. In one Queen Ina I and her court are shown. Mr. Taylor said, In comment ing on the new Dodge which is expected soon, "It has been years since the automobile in dustry has produced an oper ating improvement approaching in newness and general interest the Fluid Drive which will be featured in 1941 Dodge models, In consequence there is wide spread curiosity regarding the question how and to what ad vantage the power of the auto mobile engine, ordinarily pass- steel housing and tnis housing is filled with two gallons of oil. That is all there is, mechan ically, to the Dodge Fluid Drive; it is, in effect, a two-section power train with a gap in the center of the Fluid Drive unit, where oil is made the medium to carry driving energy from one section1 of the unit to the other. The operator of the new Fluid Drive Dodge has it in his power to drive, if he wishes, the way he has always driven, Or he may do 90 percent of his normal driving with the gear shift left in 'high.' He may stop the car without re leasing the clutch pedal; he may ascent hills in 'high' at speeds as low as one mile per hour, stopping midway on the in cline, then starting again, with the gears still in 'high.' A plain and homespun ex planation of the Fliud Drive is one aven by the Dodge com pany's vice president and dir ector of sales, Forest H. Akers. Our Fluid Drive," says Mr. Akers, "is mounted between the crankshaft and the clutch, where it takes the place of the conventional flywheel. The in stallation is of extreme simplic ity, for it consists of only two working part s t w o bowl- shaped shells of steel into which a series of evenly spaced blades or fins are welded. One of these bowl-shaped shells is mounted its open end facing toward the rear one the end of the engine crankshaft; it is called the driver or im peller; the other Fluid Drive part, similar in construction to the first one, is mounted on the drive shaft of the car In such a way that its open end faces the impeller almost, but not his bride crashed into a ditch 12 quite, toucning iu miles south of here. Between fire and a police clean-up, there won't be any Jungle Town left by the end of the week. Because the residential neigh borhood was growing up around Jungle Town, situated at the -south end of Fir street, the police department last week began tearing down and carting away the unrestricted sub-division's wood, cardboard and tin shanties of unorthodox architec tural design erected by and for the exclusive use of transients on their uppers. Late Friday afternoon fira came to the aid of the police and wiped out three of the shacks. The police had already removed three. There remained only four which will be removed this week. What caused the fire was not determined. Employes at the adjacent warehouse of the Cali fornia Oregon Power company laid a hose line and put the fire out.
