SOLDIER REUNION
The forty-tlghth annual meet
ing of the Southern Oreg.m Sol
dier's and Sailor'i reunion as
sociation will be held in the
Grange Hall at Central Point,
on Saturday August 24, 1940.
The association was formed in
1892 by some of the posts of
this district and has since been
carried on by the Grand Army
of the Republic and its Auxili
ary the Women's Relief Corps,
and the Sons and Daughters of
the Union Veterans of the Civil
War. According to the by-laws
there are no dues payable ex
cept 25c when registering at the
annual meeting, and the sum so
collected takes care of the ex
penses of the Association In,
connection with the meeting.
Registration starts at 10:30
followed by a business session
and election of officers and se
lecting a meeting place for
1941. At noon dinner will be
served in the Grango dining
hall. Visitors are to furnish
rakes, pies, salads etc., and to
bring their own table service.
The program will begin at
two o'clock in the afternoon.
Each organization to furnish
one number.
It Is urgently desired every
Union Veteran of the Civil war
be in attendance. An invitation
is extended to the members of
the Women's Relief Corps,
Daughters of the Union Veter
ans, Sons of the Union Veterans.
American Legion. Disabled
American Veterans. Veterans of
Foreign Wars and United Span
ish Veterans.
TOLD TO POLICE
Reports of four minor auto
mobile accidents were on file In
city police station today. They
were:
Machines operated by Vernon
S. Wright of Route 4 and Robert
Young of Medford collided with
slight damage at 10th and King
streets Wednesday evening.
Reuben W. Frame of Medford
and Wallace S. Clares of Route
1 drove autos involved in a mis
hap at Eighth street and Central
avenue this morning.
Goldie Wurster of 628 Dakota
avenue and A. B. Lyron of
Route 4 operated vehicles In
volved in an accident at Phoenix
Wednesday night.
Harry E. Rhodes of Central
Point and Eric Anderson of Cop
per, Oregon drove cars colliding'
with slight damage at rourtn
and Grape streets Wednesday
afternoon.
BORROWER GATES
AUTO IS SOUGHT
Southern Oregon authorities
were searching today for the
driver and a 1939 Mercury four
door sedan, which was borrow
ed from the C. E. Gates used car
lot for a purported trial spin
Wednesday afternoon and had
not been returned.
Mr. Gates reported to city po
lice that a man giving the name
of Herman Lee Hart took the
car at 3 p. m. yesterday, after
saying he wanted to "try it out
for a few minutes with the
view of purchasing it. When the
car hadn't been returned at 6:45
p. m, the police were notified.
City police stated that Her
man Lee Hart was sent to the
state penitentiary in 1938 from
Klamath county for car theft
and burglary, and expressed the
belief that the driver of the
Gates Mercury was the same
man.

Value of consumer purchases
at Independent retail stores rose
in July over last year in most
western states, bureau of the
census reports showed today.
Washington topped the list
with a 12.5 per cent gain in ag
gregate sales for around a score
of major lines of goods, from
food to automobiles. Only Colo
rado recorded a decline, and
that but 1.5 per cent.
Oregon's gain was 0.9 per
cent, California's 8.8, Arizona's
6.3, Idaho's 4.7. Montana 6.0
Nevada 3.2, New Mexico 0.9,
Utah 3 and Wyoming's 2.9.
Along the Pacific coast, auto
mobiles far outran other items
in sales showings, with gains of
30.5 per cent in California, 29.7
in Washington and 23.3 in Ore
gon over July, 1939.
In Oregon, Portland' sales
rose 12.3 per cent, Salem 9.1,
Eugene 18.6, Klamath Falls 10.6
and Medford 4. Astoria lost 2.1.
