MFDFORI MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOKP. ORKnOV. FRTDAY. AUGUST 16, 1940 PAGE TWO GERMANS FAIL TO HALT ROUTINE OF Ordinary Home Life in Dan ger Area Goes On As Usual Save for Blackouts Br Sidn.y J. Williams VP Staff Correspondent London, Aug. 16. (U.R) Some say the blitzkrieg is on. If it is, more than 1,000.000 families In this city appear not to be aware of it. Here it a day in the life of one of London's middle-class fa milies, a day during which hordes of German air raiders were smashing at the coast of Britain 30 to 60 miles away. The family includes the wife. 40; the husband, 43; son, 18, and two daughters, IS and 12. The place is an ordinary home In what authorities call "the danger area of London." Up at 7:30 The eldest daughter rubs the sleep out of her eyes at 7 :30 a.m., rises and folds the black out curtains in each room. That ls the first reminder that a war is going on. Then she glances at the sky and, perhaps, remarks "balloons up," indicating favorable weath er for an air raid. The others don't bother to re ply. Balloons are an old story by now and the remark was trite. The family assembles at the breakfast table. The meal is cer eal with milk, eggs and bacon or fish, toast, marmalade or homemade jam, tea or coffee. Just what it was before the war. The husband glances at the morning paper headlines and casually gives the family the war news. Yesterday he glee fully announced that "the RAF got 78 jerries. Guess Hitler isn't going to find it so easy to take this little old island." That perks the family up and they go on about their business a little more jauntily than us ual. Streets Thronged Husband and son depart for work, the daughters for school, and the wife takes her market basket and goes shopping. The streets are thronged as usual with many khaki-clad fig ures mingling with the civilians another sign of war but a good one; If the soldiers weren't there, it would mean they were Deeded on the coast. The wife finds everything she wants at the market and picks out a select joint of Juicy Eng lish beef. She buys no vege tables because she will pick what she needs later from her own garden plot, planted as a wartime measure in connection with the big "for victory" cam paign. The daughters return home for lunch cold tongue, green salad, tinned or fresh fruit. Then they go to the movies and return in the afternoon for tea, at which they stuff on fancy pastries. Dinner time, about 7:30 p.m., finds the family together again, the table plentifully laden, and father equipped with a batch of evening papers from which he culls a digest of the news. Blackout Only Trouble The RAF and the navy seem to be functioning all right, he reports, and the Germans still are on the other side of the channel. The blackout makes night forays in search of entertain ment too much trouble, so the family retires to the parlor and listens to the radio or reads, with the womenfolk knitting things for the forces. The daughters go to bed af ter hearing the 9 p.m. news bul letlns. The others follow after listening to the empire news broadcast at 11 p.m. - The Germans, over and over again, have predicted annihila tion for Britain. This family's answer at the end of a routine day, is bed and sleep. ' ; I --11 ,V WAR P O S T-Intent en lob Is Former Jodie Robert P, Patterson (above), a native of Glens Falls, N.
