HAS HE TRIP Baltimore, Aug. 14. (UP.) The S. S. McKeesport, Red Cross relief ship which carried a cargo of food and surgical supplies to unoccupied France, returned here Tuesday after an "unevent ful" voyage. Capt. Vernon Jubb said the crossings were uneventful and that the ship had passed through the British blockade without being halted. "The war has had a telling ef fect upon people in southern France," Jubb said. "Foodstuffs are at a premium, especially dairy products. The mayor of Marseilles came aboard the boat when we were having pork chops and begged for one. He ate it ravenously. People sent letters to the ship pleading for food." M 1 30-YEAR IRK TASKJOR CCC Director McEntee Believes Corps Should Be Made Permanent Organization By H. O. Knight (U.P. Staff Correspondent.) Washington. (U.R) Director James J. McEntee of tha civil ian conservation corps believes the CCC should be made per manent because the needs of re forestation, wildlife restoration and park improvement! are at least a 30-years' job. McEntee declared the CCC faces a challenge In meeting those needs outside of demands which will be made by the de fense program. Although defense needs may modify the work program, Mc Entee said CCC work in the future should concentrate on re forestation, forest improvement. forest protection, soil erosion prevention, flood contorl, wild life restoration, public rang development and outdoor rec reation (parks). Ask for Camps. "My desk." ho said, "Ij piled high with requests from com munities for location of camps. The works projects proposed tn our fields, forests, wildlife ref uges and parks would keep the) corps of the present slza occu pied for from 30 to 30 yean. From another angle, each year sees another crop of youths reaching young manhood and a large percentage of them un able to find Jobs, either because of employment lag or because of their own inexperience. Un til such time as these youthi can be absorbed in private in dustry, business and agriculture. I believe there is justification for continuance of the CCC. I believe it should be made per manent. Enters Slh Year. McEntee said the CCC faces a new objective national de fense as It "marches forward in Its eight year," despite the needs it must fill on the purely domestic front. "As fast as the needs of in dustry and the national defense departments are made known, the corps will modify its pres ent program to comply to the limit of its ability," he said. "If industry wants men with pe cial mechanical training in either the automotive or avia tion fields, the corps is prepared to train them. "If the national defense de partment wants specialists in such fields as communications and operation, maintenance and repair of mechanized or automo tive equipment, the corps will train men in these fields. In short, it will be a huge reservoir of trained man-power upon wnicn industry and the national defense services can draw." As far as can be foreseen now, he added, addition of "na tional defense tasks will not materially interfere witn the advancement of the corps' con servation program." The first United State presi dent who wai born an American rather than a British subject was Martin Van Buren. Steer Snatches Farmer's Roll Butler, Pa., Aug. 14.
