OF BEAVER CAMP Robert Taylor Heads Annual 'School for Citizenship Others Also Honored Portland, Aug. t.P) The Beaver Boys' State, selfgov ernlng youth encampmert spon jo red by the American Legion at Hill military academy, elect ed Robert Taylor of Medford governor yesterday. Two hundred and fifty boys from all sections of Oregon en rolled for the annual "school for citizenship." Other Medford boys elected to office at the camp w.re Vern Kellenbeck, postmaster general, Frank Dixon, circuit judge, and Alton Johnson, senator, Robert R. Ebel was Informed by tele gram today. Mr. Ebel, who ac companied the boys to camp, Is chairman of American Legion Medford post's Beaver Boys' State committee. There are 16 Jackson county boys at the camp, 13 from the Medford area and three from Ashland. It was the first time In four years' of boys' camp that a Medford youth was elect ed governor. Taylor Is the son of Mrs. J. W. Gustafson, Jacksonville N highway. He will enter his sen ior year at Medford high school this fall. He is senior class pres ident and last year was junior class president. He was also assistant business manager of the student body last year. He is a track man and in addition to his many other accomplish ments he is considered a pro ficient student. Kellenbeck is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur J. Kellenbeck. 848 Dakota avenue. He also Willi enter his senior year at the high school this fall. He is business manager of the student body and is rated as an all-around student. Dixon is the son of Mrs. Vol ney Dixon, 526 West Tenth street. He Is a Junior at the high school. He is a member of the school band, being a clarinetist. Johnson's parents are Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Johnson, 17 New town street He also Is a high school junior. He devotes much of his time to the Boy Scouts, being an Eagle and Sea scout. TRUCMDTOHIT HEAR EAGLE PT. Eagle Point, Aug. 8. (Spl) An automobile-truck accident near here this morning caused BO injuries to occupants of the vehicles, but badly damaged a logging truck owned by Ernie Segessman and slightly damaged a coupe operated by Sam Har nlsh of Eagle Point. The coupe, according to re ports, pulled onto the highway from a side road. The truck, traveling toward Medford, swerved to the right side of the road to avoid striking the car, but failed to miss it entirely. After hitting the car the truck went into a deep ditch and was smashed up considerably. The truck driver's name was not learned. T TOPIC AT ROTARY James Moore presented an In formative talk on the paint in dustry at Tuesday's luncheon meeting of the Rotary club at the Hotel Medford. Mr. Moore traced the history of paint from its first use in southern France. Ingredients of paint and meth ods used in its manufacture were also outlined. 'Three and a half billion dollars is the sum saved the people of the United States an nually through the use of paint," Moore said, adding "substantial savings are also made in re duced light bills." Lipstick, a product of the paint industry, is used so exten sively that 40,000 barns could be painted with the amount sold last year, according to the speaker. Moore told the Rotarians that paint was first manufactured in this country in 1806 and first produced on the Pacific coast In 1857. Recent discoveries of chemists have greatly improved paints and broadened their usefulness. Bror L. Crondal, professor of forestry at the University of Washington in Seattle, will give a lecture on woods and their utilization at a public luncheon' meeting of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce director ate in the basement dining room of the Hotel Medford tomorrow noon. Because of the new uses be ing found for wood in the man ufacture of a growing list of products and because of the eco nomic importance of the forests in this part of the state, the board of directors felt that Pro fessor Grondal's talk would be of general interest here. For that reason everyone interested in the economic development of the Rogue River valley is in vited to hear the guest speaker. The only condition imposed by the directors was that reserva tions be made by telephoning the chamber of commerce, 2640, not later than 10:30 a. m. tomorrow. (P) Dr. Adolph Weinzirl, city health of ficer, reported Portland's first infantile paralysis case of the year today. A three and a half year old girl is ill from a mild infection. ICIAN CHIEF Rolph Hulbert was elected president of the Medford unit of the state association of beau ty shop owners and operators at a dinner and business meet ing last evening In Hotel Hol land. Other officers elected were? vice-president, Rhea Hoover: treasurer, Don Cook; secretary, Lillian Gilham. Guest speaker for the even ing was Mrs. C. R. Bowman, district president of the orga nization. Her subject had to do with affairs of the assocl atlnn. It was voted by the group to hold meetings the first Wednes day of each month at 7:15 p. m. with the next session scheduled for September 4. An invitation to attend is issued to all owners and operators of southern Ore gon beauty salons.
