EASED BY HIKE Grand Rapids. Mich. (U.R)- Thirty-nlne-year-old Ralph Fos ter Clark of Tulsa, Okla.. hitch. hiked 1,000 miles to clear his conscience, and now with a Judge's blessing has no great obstacle to his desire to become a minister. Clark told Circuit Judge Leonard D. Verdicr he had come here from Tulsa to clear falsi ties in a marriage license he obtained In Grand Rapids in 1935, to wed Emillie E. Floyd. He said he had been" married long ago In Fairmount, W. Va., but his wife left him with their two sons and later, in 1032, divorced him. His divorce has been so ex pensive, Clark said, that he tried to keep his whereabouts a secret, and when he obtained a marriage license here in 1635 he gave his name as Ralph Fos ter, listed a city other than his native home as his birthplace, and swore he had never been married. SHIP BlNlES BEE L Jolla, Col. (UP Scient ists are quetly conducting ex periments here which may rid U. S. navy craft of a rank nuis ance ship-fouling, or barnacle growths. Four savants working on the test hope to announce soon to the world that they have solved the age-old problem of the growth on ships' bottoms, which imposes a toll of millions of dollars annually by retarding continuous operation of vessels. The fouling not only with draws ships from service for dry-docking, but reduce! speed of vessel as much as 90 per cent, scientists pointed out. FINANCE WILLI Washington, .July 29 (IP) Some supporters of Wendell L. Willkie, Republican presidential candidate, have started "chain letters" to solicit $1 contribu tions to his campaign chest. Letters were received here to day enclosing printed envelopes to be sent to "Wendell Willkie, Elwood, Indiana." They bore the slogans "We workers want Will kie" and "A buck (or luck." The letters suggested that the recipients distribute the envel opes to interested friends snd that they, too, have similar en velopes printed and distributed. The letters said the object Is to "surprise" Willkie with a sub stantial campaign fund at his ac ceptance speech ceremonies In Elwood on Aug. 17. Sign oi Bomb Cladewater, Tex. ORDERfflSPEEOEBj Result to Determine if Pres ent Limit to be Continued Declares McNutt. Washington, July 29. i Federal Security Administrator Paul V. McNutt said today he has asked the public health ser vice to expedite a scientific re view of its three-year Investiga tion of the toxicity of lead arsen ate spray residue on fruit. Upon these determinations will depend whether present limits on the amount of residue that may be left on fruit shall be continued, made more strin gent or relaxed. McNutt'i state ment was prompted by inquiry from R. W. Gray of Sacramento, Calif., manager of the California tree fruit agreement which rep resents California Bartlett pear growers and shippers. Old Limit In Effect McNutt said that since hit de partment took over administra tion of the food and drug act from the agriculture department on July 1, the old tolerance reg ulations have been kept in ef fect. "I can assure you that If a relaxation of the present toler ances Is recommended I shall promptly put such a recommen dation into effect." ' McNutt wrote Gray. "Quite evidently your Information that the feder al security agency is contemplat ing an Increase in the tolerance Is subject to some qualification We contemplate an increase only If definitely recommended by competent scientists. I recognize the difficulty with which the fruit industry is confronted, particularly the California pear industry at this time of the year. With that in mind I am asking the public hilth service scientific review to be expedited in every possible way."
