PAGE FOUR MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. JfEDFORD. OREGON'. "WEDNESDAY. JULY 21 1949. Sport Graphs Billy Hulen Says; McShane, Pete May Grapple On Next Week Card Danny McShane and Pete Bel eastro, who flatly refused to combine their off-color grapple tactica against the four legltt mate gents in Monday'i battle royal, may be tossed at each other in next weeks main vent The two ruffians not only failed to pool their riotous re sources in said battle royal, but actually flew into each other like a couple of angry Hey cats. They acted like they didn't like each other a little bit, and Promoter Mack Llllard believes the pair could provide a scorching contest if left to their own devices. Llllard said today he would do his best to get both their OK's to the match, and added that he didn't think the Job would be difficult. Only one thing might stymie the match, ha explained, and that was the matter of financial guarantee to McShane, who certainly looks out for Mrs. McShane's son, Danny. However, Mack pre dicted, any difficulties along those lines should be fairly easy to iron out, what with another near-capacity crowd expected. Joe Wharton's weekly toll ing report from Grants Pass says thai the cool, cloudy and occasional rainy weather of the past week has greatly Improved angling conditions along the middle section of the Rogue river. Fly fishing for small trout has been exceptionally good. Wharton reported, with many ntmrods getting limit catches en California hackles, special red ant and similar patterns very lightly dressed on small hooks. No large steelhrads have yet been taken in this water. In dicating that the summer run Is rather late getting started, Wharton reported. However, news from Gold Beach was to the effect that a good run has been coming in at the mouth of the river and is due upstream shortly. The Craters are still In the running for the state semi-pro baseball championship, despite that 2 to 7 setback at the hands of Albany Monday eve. It takes two losses to knock a club Irrevocably out of the tournament, and as that was Medford's first defeat, they still have ont to go before sur rendering hope. The way it stands now, Med ford Is slated to play Jack and Jill Tavern of Portland next Friday night at Silverton. Jack and Jill lost to B. and O. last night, so fell Into the once beaten bracket Just like the Craters did when Bed Miller nailed them to the cross Mon day. II Is a terrible road to the title from here on out, though, and we believe It Is next to Impossible. Just look at the Criter schedule from bow on to the championship game next Wednesday night. If they get lheroi Friday night against the JUlers, back to Medford for tnelr Eugene State league aeries Saturday ve and Sunday afternoon, back to Silverton for games Monday and Tuesday nights. In other words, starting Fri day night, the Craters will plav six straight days without a break that Is, of course, if they are to hammer through to the crown. They mav be able to do It, but the odds seem stacked far too heavily against them. Fights Last Night FIGHTS td hed By the Associated Press. Los Angeles Eddie Marcus. 134. J l.iatti-a UP9TMR8 LEAD AFTER U Clarence English, manager of the Medco team, announced this afternoon he was entering a pro test of wooden Box s victory on the grounds that the latter club used an ineligible player. Eng lish said that Al Wray got hi release from Fluhrer's Bread eaters before the game and im mediately signed with Wooden Box. Wray, English stated, should not have been allowed to play until he remained on the side lines one game after being re leased and signing with another team. The Medco manager said he would file a protest with Al Piche, president of the softball association, and E. H. Hedrick, field manager. Wooden Box's fart - coming gang of softballers shot Into the American league leadership at the stadium last night with a decisive 7 to 4 triumph over Medco. It was the Boxmen's second straight victory over last year's champs and winners of the first two rounds of the cur rent campaign. The victors put over the clinching tallies in the first in ning, scoring three times after two were out, on Boyle's sin gle, Piche's sacrifice, D'Arcy's j infield out and booming triples ! by Hank Pacheco and Al Wray. From then on the Boxmen were never headed. With the score 7 to 1 in the seventh and final Inning. Pitch er Joe Peccia of the Boxmen eased up and Medco punched three runs across the plate on four hits and a base on balls. Boyle hit a double for the winners and Swanson and Hof fard swatted two-beggers for Medco. In notching his second win over Medco. Peccia whiffed eight and walked seven, while allowing nine hits. Morria Steiner, on the mound for the losers, fanned two and walked the same number. He was touched for 10 blows. He struck It fair and hard, and it brought in another rookie from second base with the run that beat the Seattle Rainlers, Pacific Coast baseball league leaders, 3 to 2. in the ninth inning of a scheduled seven Inning game. The witching hour single by plnchhitter Arlte Schwab, which scored outfielder Berg strom, gave the lowly Port landers the first win of their last 11 games against Seattle including the first game of last night's doubleheader, won by Seattle. 4 to 1. Oakland's impotent rage was puny compared to that of Dick Newsome, Stn Diego pitcher, who lost to Sacramento, 9 to 2. Blasted for 12 hits, the furious Newsome wound up and threw the ball over the grandstand. The umpire took the cue and threw Newsome out of the ball game. Then, with the outcome of the fight a deep, dark secret, release the film simultaneously in motion pictures throughout the country. Jacobs believes that in the near future the real money in prizefight promotion will come from movie and television right. He hit on his latest idea when the ban on the transportation of fight films across state lines was lifted a few months ago. Now there isn't a wet blanket waver anywhere in my family line, but I feel it my duty to point out to Promoter Jacobs a few of the flaws in his scheme. I might as well beat some un friendly sanity commission to it, don't you think? Let us consider the filming of Baer and Louis as a grade A. super colossal, four-bells-and-a-lemon production.
