Ragsdale Washington, July 23. UP) The impulse of Edward R. Stet tinius, Jr., to cut swiftly through red tape obtained quar ters for his defense commission j staff in three weeks shorter time than department heads thought possible. Stettinius wanted his staff In the war department munitions building, across the street from his own office in the federal reserve building. He learned that such quarters were avail able and got proper authoriza tion for them. But one whole section of the war department needed moving. The offices needed two coats of paint. New equipment had to be brought in. Accustomed to the fast moving processes of big time business, Stettinius called the proper official and bowled him over with a request for the offices, including the moving Job, the painting and the new equipment, on one day's notice. Done In Week "But that can't be done, Mr. Stettinius," was the reply. "Maybe in a month but " Stettinius relented enough to allow a week for the whole pro cess of moving, painting and equipping. It was done in a week, though it took a fleet of army trucks to do a hurry up Job of hauling in the new furniture. This faculty of quick action, plus a keen and abiding interest in his fellow man, comes near to being a dominant Stettinius trait. His interest in the men around him gave him his first job. When he was at the Uni versity of Virginia, the atten tion of this son of one of the country's keenest industrial or ganizers, the late "Ed" Stet tinius, Saint Louis match man ufacturer who became a part ner in the Morgan banking firm, was caught by the stu dents who were trying to work their way to an education. He called some of his friends together, canvassed, the town, listed all Jobs open to college men and set up a college or ganization to help ambitious youngsters find a place. First Job With G. M. The story of this work came to John L. Pratt, vice president of General Motors. A little later, after Stettinius had finished col lege, he showed up at the Gen eral Motors office to get per mission to go through the com pany plants. Pratt asked to see him when he got back, told him General Motors wanted an enlarged per sonnel or industrial relations program. "We'll give you a trial if you are willing to spend two or three years in the factories on a first hand study," he said. "Learn at first hand what are the problems of the men." Here he was in the store room. Later he worked in the production sales and advertising departments, then became em ployment manager and assistant on Industrial relations matters. Advance Rapid The meteoric rise had started. Successively, he handled all as- r-te f fleneral T r,tnr ln,4i,- share of the work movement in the second federal reserve dis trict under Alfred P. Sloan, Jr.; was liaison officer between the Industrial advisory board of the national recovery administration and the administration; was vice chairman of the United States Steel corporation's finance com mittee; and. finally, chairman of the board of the corporation. Such a business career might well fill a lifetime. Stetttnius is still only 39, though his hair is prematurely white. Stettinius won't be found on any tennis courts or golf links around Washington. But If any one gets up early enough, he may find the raw materials chieftain taking a long walk along the river front. Beagle, July 23. (Spl.) Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Mr. snd Mrs. John Dodge of Med ford were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. EUta Pleasant Hour club held Its July meeting at the borne of Thelma Martin with 16 members present. A desert luncheon wss served by the hostess after which there waa a short business meeting. The after noon was spsnt sewing for the refu gee children. Next meeting will be 1 at the home of Mrs. Lundy, the , second Wednesday afternoon in Au gust. Word was received by Mrs. Frlnk that Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Bennett and Gorden Walker, who left here July 14, arrived In Arlsona ssfsly. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett have been visiting relatives and friends hers for the past two months. Oorden Wslker went bsck with them. Several members of Pleasant Hour club enjoyed the picnic on Rogue river at Bybee bridge with the Sams Valley and Table Rock clubs July 18. The 4-K Forestry No. 1 and No. 3, with their leader, Thelma Martin, enjoyed an overnight camp at Dodge Bridge Thursday and Friday, That finishes up the year's 4-H require ments and now they will get ready for the fair. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Idler of Mc Leod Invited thalr Beagle friends to their home July 22, for a picnic and basket lunch. Quite a number enjoyed the day. American Union Sunday school met July 21 after which Rev. D. D. Randall preached at noon. A picnic dinner was en- Joyed by a Urge crowd. After the dinner Rev. Randall enter tained with music, played from the loud speaker on his car. The Misses Francee and Rose Smith of Butte Palls, also Miss Rare Chestnut of Reese Creek district were teachers m charge of the Bible school here July to 19. There were 34 children enrolled and an enrage of 27 dally attendance. July 23. (IP) Melvin C. Carmichael. 19, was back In the Douglas county Jail again today, the fourth time In as many years, again charged with auto theft. The youth, who formerly re sided at Camas Valley, west of Roseburg, was released from the state penitentiary in May of this year, following sen tence of two years imposed in June, 1939, after he had plead ed guilty to- stealing an auto mobile and driving it into Cali fornia. Carmichael'g escapade start ed when he was 14 years old with two arrests In Oklahoma according to the records of the federal bureau of Identification, Thornton aald. In 1030 he was arrested at Roseburg and sen tenced to the state training school for bicycle theft Fol lowing his release in 1938 he was arreste.l on a charge of auto theft and was sentenced to four years In the training school, the deputy sheriff re ported. Released on parole, alter serv ing a year, he obtained a Job as a cook In a CCC camp at Tiller, and after working only a few days stole an automobile belonging to a camp foreman and drove to San Luis Obispo, where he was taken into cus tody and brought back to Rose burg to be sentenced to two years in tho penitentiary. Taken in Yreka. The offense with which ho now Is charted, Thornton said, involves the alleged theft of an automobile from O. C. Johns of Roseburg, and theft of a hunting rifli and cartridge belt from a car belonging to Georgs Bacher. Carmichael was ar rested at Yreka, Friday, beint! picked up on a chargo of reck less driving. Local authorities were notified and brought him back to Roseburg Saturday night. Thornton reported that the youth had admitted the thefts.
