Marysville, Kai.. July 20.
wP A chase by 150 citizens. In
which more than 20 shots were
fired, ended with the wounding
and capture of one of two es
caped convicts in a church a
few hours after they had rob
bed the DiUer, Neb., State bank
of $5,000.
The wounded bandit's com
panion escaped. He kidnaped
two persons and commandeer
ed two automobiles in his panic
stricken flight.
The captured man, Lowell
Haenze, 27, of Sleepy Eye,
Minn., told Tom Blodgett, city
marshal, that he escaped with
two companions from the Fort
Madison, Iowa, penitentiary
June 22. His fellow fugitives
are Ivan Sullivan, 29, Trenton,
Mo., and Forrest Estes, 35,
Mountain Home, Ark.
Haenze refused to name his
companion who escaped. Leo
Schramm, assistant city mar
shal, said he admitted, however,
that he participated in the
DiUer bank robbery. He had
$1,800 in his pockets. A suit
case abandoned by the bandits
was said by Blodgett to contain
a "large amount of currency"
believed to have been taken in
the DiUer holdup.
The two robbers were sur
prised by Blodgett and Howard
Heleker, deputy sheriff, at
bus depot.
BLISTERING HEATS
SWEEP MID-WEST
Chicago, Jujy 20. UP) The
most intense heat wave ot the
year sent the mercury climbing
toward the high nineties in the
mlddlewest today with only
temporary relief in sight.
Thunder showers were fore
cast for parts of the mid-continent
but there was little pros
pect of general relief before
Monday.
High temperatures were re
ported draining the spring
wheat belt and corn producing
areas of the reserve supply of
moisture.
Blistering heat from the
southwest which overspread the
plains states yesterday brought
100 degree temperatures to
many regions. Phillipsburg,
Kas., reported the highest read
ing, 109 degrees.

(U.P.i The United States naval
air station today admitted own
ership of the "mysterious" bal
loon which had kept the New
York state police and the con
stabulary of 38 southern New
York communities in a frenzy
most of the night.
The balloon was on an au
thorized dusk-to-dawn flight
which ended successfully at
Milford, Conn., 80 miles from
here, the navy announced.
Four naval officers took off
in the balloon from the naval
air station here last evening.
Lieut. W. A. Hanger was In
command. They set down at
Milford shortly before dawn to
avoid being blown into Long
Island sound.
That, the navy station her
announced, was all there was
to it.
But in the small hours of the
morning the balloon, appearing
over New York towns, had ter
rified citizens and brought gen
eral police alarms. The balloon
was "suspicious," the police
broadcasts said.
WALL ST. SLOWED
New York. July 20.-
The stock market muddled
through another lackadaisical
session today and finished the
week with an Irregularly lower
trend.
Price changes, however, were
inconsequential for the most,
part and were rendered more
or less .meaningless by the fact
that the turnover was th
smallest for any Saturday In
more than two years.
Brokers again attributed
apathy mainly to the desire of
speculative forces to keep fair-
ly well in the clear pending
further European war develop
ments, particularly a possible
attempt of Hitler to make good
his latest threat to destroy Eng
land if the British refuse to
make peace.
The business outlook remain
ed as a moderate market prop.
although there was talk here
and there of nearby let-down
as a prelude to the broadening
of defense spending. Foreign af
fairs, on the whole, tended to
obscure the political scene at
home, with Wall street Inclined
to withhold definite opinions on
the presidential race until the
campaign gets farther along.

New Orleans, La., July JO
(flV-A spokesman for Louisi

man for the American Sugar

that Wallace did "all In his
power to destroy" the sugar
Industry. He declared the "Re
publicans are Louisiana sugar's
only hope."
The state s delegation to the
national Democratic convention
deserted Wallace because of th
agricultural secretary's sugar
quota restriction program and
plow-up campaign. They cast
their 20 votes for Speaker Bank-
head.
Prescott Foster, chairman ot
the delegation, was the first to
announce he would support Re
publican candidate WUlkle for
