T-TO-F DESPITE SPEECH IS AHEAD By DeWltt MaeKentl Hitler's neare-sneech leave' the situation Just where it was. I unless the British government! sues for terms something I which Premier Churchill less than a week ago declared never would happen. This being the case Europe must endure a conflict which, as Hitler says, "can end only with the complete annihilation of one or the other ot the two adversaries." Well, that'i what this war started out to be a fight to a finish between Germany and England and that'i likely to be the way it winds up. The Nazi chieftain sayi he knows that this "will bring up on the people unending suffer ing and misery" but that he has relieved his "conscience towards the things that will then come, that is if this last appeal to reas on is unheeded by England. The reichstag speech also was! intended as a tonic for the Ger- Dln street. man people. Win or lose, I Viola Aldredge. Of j Inez Ferguson, Warden; Betty course, it would be on his terms, j Pankey, Secretary: Ruth Rohl. but he could afford to make j treasurer: Ida Henderson, guard; heavy concessions to Britain if, Lillian Weidman and Sally he could keep his present con-1 Musty, leaders; Mrs. H. W. Cop quests without having to fight : inger, chaplain, and Minnie further to hold them. He says he Is going to win, and he certainly has a right to a great degree of confidence. The odds perhaps are in his favor. In undertaking to Invade England (if he does) he will be essaying a feat which would appall the average military leader. He is, as Prime Minis ter Churchill has said, coming up against a much bigger pro position than he has heretofore encountered on the battlefield. Some neutral observers concede Britain a fighting chance to win. I was much struck this morn ing by a little item from Wash ington, An economic report re ceived from Germany by the commerce department says po tatoes, gram and other com modifies are being grown on military airports, especially in corners and tides which can be spared from war purposes. Of course, this doesn't mean that Germany is hungry already. It is an exhibition of German efficiency. Still, such extreme measures bespeak a fear of the future. Over Germany, as well as the rest of the continent, hangs the threat of the hunger which overtook the reich in the world war and forced ita sur render. V.F.W. First was a week recess for the Republican con vention at Philadelphia snd more recently the 10-day Inter lude for the Democratic ses sions at Chicago.
