Fowler to form ulate plans for a full day of activities to be held Tuesday, July 23. Charles Wing is chair man of the committee and others are Mr. Fowler, L. E. Francis, Leonard Freeman, Ralph Jennings and G. H. Stowell. The association made plans to visit all leading Guernsey breeders in the valley and for a picnic at the home of G. H. Stowell on the Rogue river at 1 p. m. Mr. Jennings Is in charge of the inspection cara van. Among placet to be visited are those of Mr. Jennings, Ches ter Wendt, Tom Blgham and J. E. Short. At the Bigham borne the 4-H club boys will dis play about 11 head of calves for inspection. C. A. Smith, field representative of the American Guernsey cattle club, will attend the all day event. SLATED TONIGHT WITH F.D.R. TALK (Continued from r-.ce On.) were being ORDER CLOSES STATEjORESTS Because of hazardous fire con ditions, two southern Oregon forest areas under state protec tion were ordered closed to un regulated use in a governor's proclamation announced today. The areas were the McLeod area and the Jenny Creek area in the vicinity of Hyatt Prairie dam. Signs have been posted to mark the closed areas. The closures are routine and are made at the recommenda tion of the state forest patrol here. It was emphasized that the only difference to the forest user Is that he will now have to pro cure a permit to enter the closed area. Purpose of the closure Is to keep the fire situation better In hand. Other areas may be closed if and when conditions warrant such action. The permits are free and may be obtained at patrol headquar ters on the Midway road here or at guard stations near the closed areas. FOOD PROCESSING BULLETIN ISSUED Corvallls (SpU Probably no publication at Oregon State college is more in demand at this time of the year than the bulletin on "Home Food Pres ervation," which includes in structions on canning, drying, salting, smoking, and storing various kinds of food products. For the second time this pub lication has been revised and brought up to date, and now the third edition" is off the press and ready for free distribution to Oregon citizens. Many author ities at the college have cooper ated in the preparation of the bulletin. The new edition, Extension Bulletin No. S42, may be had from any county extension of fice, or directly from the college. Langlois Has Bias Langlois, Ore., July 18. X) Fire destroyed the Cudahy Packing company cheese plant and the home of Manager D. A. King last night. King, who said the blaze apparently orig inated near the boiler, esti mated the loss at $12,000. Pilchard Appear Astoria, Ore., July 18 Pilchard appeared in large schools off the Oregon and Washington coasts today but the seining fleet remained Idle be cause of a price dispute. Plant operators said fishermen asked $14 a ton, $6 more than offered. Roosevelt already felt. Here and there among the delegates were indications of bitterness over the Iron-fisted control of the convention by the Roosevelt men. But there were no indications that any substan tial, trend of bolts from the ticket would develop. The delegates yelled and sweated through the hot and humid hours last night and at 1:41 a. m. (Chicago daylight time) their major job was done and the chair let them go home under orders to be back at 2 p. m. Putting Farley In nomination. Senator Carter Glass, (D., Va.) blistered the third term idea. There was reference by the anti-draft brigade to their men1 and the way they kept their! word. But this convention would ' have none of that I Wanted Roosevelt It wanted Mr. Roosevelt and it got him at 12:55 a. m. when: New York's fat delegation of' 04 votes delivered 64 'i votes I for the draft with a consolation I prize of 23 for Farley and a! hopeless 1 for Secretary of State Loracii nun. I nrce and one half of New Vork-s delegates aDstalned from voting. The convention met early last evening shortly after 8 o'clock and adopted its platform. It was a long one in contrast to the brief document on which Mr. Roosevelt sought his first two White House terms. The fisht which bubbled around the for eign relations plank did not spill onto the convention floor. When Resolutions Committee Chairman Robert F. Wagner moved that the platform be adopted and Berkley put the question, there was a swelling chorus of "aye" to which the hoarse gallery crowds added their unenfranchised approval. Deltgales In Hurry Barklcy did not bother to ask for a second to Wagner's mo tion. The convention was in a hurry to get to the presidential nomination. The platform said that foreign wars shall not come to America and that "we will not send our army, naval air forces to fight In foreign lands outside the Americas, cx cept in case of attack." Singer Joe Allen and his mus ical pals were there in chaps and yellow shirts to whoop It up for Garner but the demon stration never came only Texas delegates marched with them. Wright Morrow of Houston. Texas, placed the veteran statesman in nomination but his speech was not in this conven tion's key. Two minutes after Garner's name had been placed before the convention, it was forgot ten in the brass band's melody and 10 minutes later the band was forgotten, too. Farley's days a f cabinet member and national commit tee chairman are almost over. He uttered what probably were his last words In those capaci ties before a great political con vention early today. It was in the same hall and almost in the same spot where he stood smiling and perspiring eight years ago this month as Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt, of New York, lifted another Democratic national convention to a frenzy of enthusiasm with his address accepting his first nomination. Farley was not up there to day to cheer the delegates on in a Roosevelt demonstration.
