Medford and Jackson county made relatively poor showings In the state's traffic safety cam paign in the first half of the year, it was revealed in a bulle tin Issued by the secretary of state s office. tn the Group 1 cities of the state, Medford was listed sixth and last. Last year Medford was awarded a plaque for its . safety record. For Jackson county the bulle tin shows: 331 accidents In the first six months of 1940 as com pared with 309 in the same period of 1939; 78 Injuries as compared with 48; and seven fatalities as compared with three. In the future a new method will be used in rating cities In order to attain a more ac curate picture, the bulletin said. Henceforth each month will be compared with the average of the same month of the previous three years. In the past each month has been compared with only the same month of the previous year. Salem, July 10. UP) A new record of 160 persona died in Oregon traffic accidents during the first half of 1940, being 10 more than the total for the similar period of 1937 when the previous high mark was set. .. Twenty-nine more persons were killed during the first halt of 1940 than during the first six months of last year. Secretary of State Earl Snell aid. . The June total of 3B was a new record for the month and was an increase of 10 over the June, 1939, total. ' .Of the 39 persons killed In June, eight were pedestrians. V. CARPENTER Salem, July 10 (IP) Gov. Charles A. Sprague announced yesterday the following reap pointments to four-year terms on county public welfare com missions, the appointments ef fective July 1: W. 1(. Browning of Baker, Baker county. E. W. Wiley of Roseburg, Douglas county. Alfred S. V. Carpenter of Medford. Juckson county. C. H. Demaray of Grants Pass, Josephine county. George II. McMorran of Eu gene, Lane county. Mr. Carpenter was appointed to the original relief commis sion by Gov. Julius Meier in 1933. First meeting of the commission was held on March 3, 1933, and Mr. Carpenter served as vice-chairman until May 3, 1933, when he became chairman. He has served as chairman since. Mr. Carpenter is one of only a few county welfare commis sion chairmen of the state who have served continuously since formation of the original relief committees. VP) One of the victims of the Susquehanna river's spring flood was a young deer, whose body was found hanging from its hind less 25 feet above the ground after the waters receded. The animal evi dently attempted to swim the river when it was at its crest but its legs caught in the branches and it drowned. WAR COSTS ENGLAND $26,000,000 DAILY; MORE TAXES NEEDED London, July 10. W) Brit ain is now spending 9.S00.000 pounds, or $38,000,000. a day, of which 6 500,000 pound or $20,000,000 is going to the army, navy and air force. Chancellor of the Exchequer Sir Kingsley Wood told the house of commons today. Sir Kingsley made this an nouncement in asking a vote of credit for 1.000,000.000 pounds (about $4,000,000,000). The bouse voted this credit and then went into secret ses sion on economic warfare. The government already has been given a blank check as far as appropriations go and parliament votes it money from time to time to pay the bills. The last vote of credit was 700,000,000 pounds (about $2, 800.000,000) in March. The chancellor said 575,000, 000 pounds of this already had been spent. He warned that the gap between revenue and expenditure was widening and that additional taxes must be imposed. Rare Textbook Austin, Tex.
