REGULAR steamer service out of
Columbia river to the Orient
should be an accomplished fact
within a few weeks or months. Th
proposition Is now hinging on the
American President Line (govern
ment subsidised), operating out of
San Francisco.
Federal Maritime Commission op
poses a line operating out of the
Columbia and another out of Putget
Sound. Because of this position by
the commission the American Mall
Line, out of Puget Sound, and Port
land Intereste have come to an un
derstanding. The plan 1 to have
American Mall Una furnlth alternate
sailings from Puget Sound and Co
lumbia river, with Portland repre
sented on the board of directors.
There is much bulk cargo In the
Orient destined for San Francisco.
It is now being hsndled bv foreign
flag ships. The American Mall Line
want to bring this eastbound bulk
cargo to San Francisco, discharging
there before proceeding to Columbia
river or Puet Sound. Under the
regulations of the maritime commis
sion the American President Line hss
a monopoly and the American Mali
Line cannot bring cargo to San
Francisco without the consent of the
American President Line. This latter
Una operates passenger stesmers
which srs not squlpped to bsndle
bulk cargo. In addition to which
soma of ths bulk csrgo baa to be
picked up st outport where the
passenger stesmers do not touch snd
In plsces where they could not enter.
Here 1 cargo business ths Amer
ican President Line Is tn no position
to deal with, but It must consent
to the American Mall Line enjoying
tha business or the Utter is shut
out of San Francisco. Consent can
be given by William Olbbs McAdoo,
president (at 29.000 a year) of th
President line, or a hearing ordered,
on application of the American Mall
Line, which would consume several
weeks.
AS a sidelight: American Mall Una

that deal was closed Heir Hitler

sold to France, and that deal waa
knocked galley west by tha German
Invasion. The two boata finally ware
disposed of to the navy a auxiliary
