Billy Hulett Says;
Whitman Lives Up
To All-American
Reputation Here
Strong All -Star Softball Clubs Clash at Stadium Tonight
Dick Whitman. Sllverton crn
terflelder who made the All
American aeml-pro team at
Wichita, Kas., last season, cer
tainly lived up to hla reputa
tion her over the week-end
... Saturday night he handled
six putouts and most of them
came after long runs . . . Sun
day he came up with three
more, plus one assist on a great
throw to the plate to nip Jim
Rego trying to score from sec
ond on a single . . . that's 10
perfectly-handled chances In
two games, a fine record for
n outfielder ... In addition,
he stole a base Sunday . . .
although he got only one hit In
nine trips in the two games,
he looked good at the plate . . .
but principally, he really covers
that outfield like a blanket.
For some reason, the Craters
looked rather dead out there;
they didn't show the fire that
brought them from behind twice
to beat the Portland Babes the
Sunday previous in a double
header . . . they hustled, all
right, but the old winning flame
Just wasn't there, or if it was
It didn't get kindled . . . which
isn't meant to belittle the Red
Sox, who deserved to win and
have a fine ball club ... It Just
didn't look like the Craters of
the week before, that's all.
Oetting beaned sometimes
takes away a player'a desire
to get up there and face the
agate again, but apparently
not eo Manager Tom Haw.
kins ... the Crater leader
busied two sweet singles Sun
day, and both of ihem were
kissed squarely ... once more
Pat Patterson latooed what
looked like a base hit. and
once more it whistled straight
to a fielder, this time io sec.
end base . . . Pat wondera
when It will end.

Joe Peccia, the Portland soft

arrive here Friday to labor at
Timber Products and pitch for
Wooden Box, failed to show . . .
so the Boxmen took Morrle
Steiner to Crescent City with
them for a couple of games
Saturday . . . Rocky Peterson
hit a homer and pitched for
Crescent City against Grants
Para In a baseball game July 4.
Tradition has it that the
the teams leading on July 4
will win the pennants and bat
tle It out in the world series,
and if the theory holds It will
be the dizzy Brooklyn In the
National and Cleveland in the
American . . . they led at the

IS . . . they will. Mr. Mack,

Bulldog Jackson and others
of their calibre on the pro
gram ... They say that if
Ken Manning, Sllverton first
baseman, had more color, he
would be in the Coast league
. . he hit 4 for t over the
week-end. and came up with
some great plays at the Initial
sack.
A little misunderstanding be
tween Jimmy Rego and the
board of directors of the Med
ford Athletic association, re
garding financial matters, has
been straightened out to the
satisfaction of all concerned . . ,
eight straight losses to Seattle
has Just about dropped the Port

league if the latter loop will
admit Schefter's clowns . . . the
name, Mr. L. H. Gregory of the
Oregonlan, Is Jimmy Rego, not
Tony" Rego ... the latter, re
member, used to catch for the
Beavers, and he and Jimmy are
no relation.
Two all-star Softball teams-
one composed of Catholic play
ers and managed by R. L. Lew
is, and the other lined up by
Clarence English, manager of
the league-leading Medco outfit

ply program at the stadium.

was not certain who would do
the hurling for the Catholic all

Meyer. Manager English plans
to send his star Medco hurler
Morrle Steiner, to the mound.
