MEDFORD MATL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY. JULY 5. 1940. PAGE FIVE Li FOR CARE USED IN THEJOREST Gratitude Is Expressed for July Fourth Record Many in Sylvan Centers The following bulletin was issued today by Rogue River na tional forest headquarters: "We who are responsible' for the protection of the Rogue River national forest are ex tremely proud and grateful for: the fact that there were no man-1 caused fire on the Fourth of July. "This record is due to the splendid cooperation of the thousands of visitors in the for est. Had just one of those thou sands failed to use care com pletely to extinguish a campfire or cigarette, a destructive fire would have been inevitable with the present tinder-dry conditions. "At Lake o' the Woods there were 800 summer home permit tees and guests and 2.700 camp ers. In the Union Creek district there were 1.300 people; in the Butte Falls district there were not so many in the campgrounds anderson's Thrift Market "Quality First" South Riverside Across From Bruce Bauer Lumber Co. 4 Free Deliveries Daily Any Sise Order In City 2 LARGE PARKING LOTS Fla - Vor - Aid Marshmallows Free Charm Premium Fresh, fluffy, with each package. Fishing Is Good "Fishing this week is gener ally good at the higher levels, but rather . slow in the lower lakes and streams. In the Union Creek district, the Rogue river along the Diamond Lake high way is yielding good catches with flies and grasshoppers. Limits are being taken in Muirl and Buck creeks; upper Foster and Union creeks are good and Copeland, National and Crater i creeks fair. I "In the Butte Falls district,1 grasshoppers are bringing limit catches' in the south and middle ' forks of Rogue river; fly f ishmg j in -the Seven lakes has been only I fair. At Lake o' Woods a fewi perch are being taken. At Four mile still fishing is good for sil versides and trolling for rainbow , has been very successful. Big! bass are being taken with live I toads at Hyatt lake. At Sky lakes a few eastern brook and rainbow have been caught with spinners, worms and bucktail flies. Fish lake is only fair now. In the Applegate district there has been very little successful fishing this week. Deer, Bears Seen "In the Rogie river outside the national forest, anglers re port taking trout limits almost anywhere, the most popular flies being beaver kill, queen of the water and royal coachman, sizes 12 to 14. A few salmon and a few steelhead are also being caught. "Deer continue to be seen on many of the forest roads and campj, and bears in the Union I Creek and Butte Falls districts. "The smoky atmosphere is caused by drift smoke from fires in the northern part of the state. The Rogue River national for est is free from fire and avail able for your enjoyment. We know that you will do your part to keep it so."
