MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON. FRIDAY. JUXE 29. 1940. PAGE NINE Applegate Census Counter Gains Family Life Insight By Maud Peel Mill Tribune Special Writer Bl( Applegate, June 28. tSpl) Miss Billie Rippey, census enumerator (or the Applegate district, didn't Juit count me-n no when ihe went about her Job, but the took little peek behind the scenes, and hat brought forth glowing accounts of her fellow beingi that have merited comment from W. L. Aus tin, director of the censui in Washington. D. C. Mis Rippey wrote a summary of her observations which has , been accepted for use in a sym posium of first hand information to be applied in preparing for future field work and other ac tivities In connection with the census, it was stated in the let ter she received from Mr. Aus tin. It was understood that the information will be available for publication in national maga xines in the future. Courage Impresses Exerpts from her essay, rich in sympathy and understanding, follow: I found no "head" in any family. Father and Mother co operated. Each had a helpful word, here and there, and you felt their lives were just that way. Of the poorer classes, I was struck by their ability to laugh, their courage and hope, in the face of heart-breaking, back-breaking struggle to live. How courageous was the mo ther with her family of five, in her log house on a barren knoll, hot in summer, bleak in winter. Not even a garden. The income average of the father is around four dollars a month. But the cabin is home, they are together and not on relief. No one had a clear Idea of the questions that were to be asked. From radio talks and garbled word of mouth reports, they did not know what to expect. Many were surprised and pleased at the clear, business-like ques tions, and are convinced nothing but good will come of their an swers. No one objected to giving their ages, though a surprising number had to figure them out. Bit Of Norway Houses were Interesting; there was one, set under big pine trees, built by a Norwegian lady. It was made of large logs, and the interior, outside of mod ernization, was a replica of her home in Norway. There was us ually someone home in the fore noon. Afternoons were bad, but In rural communities you can usually plan on chore time and meal time. Poverty was not uncommon. But of dirt and filth there was none. Many a housekeeper could well be envious of the spotless ness of a miner's cabin. Every one was pleasant and willing to answer all questions. I was asked into every house, invited to meals, and asked to return and visit when my work was finished. My opinion was asked on everything from livestock, babies, and cars to "is there gold In thet thar ledge?" I was of fered one little pig. one lamb, on kid, and two ducks. 1,320 Counted In all I enumerated 1.320 per sons, 330 families, 177 farms, 434 houses. It is a grand thing to meet cheerful people, all looking to the future, with heads up, cour ageous, making the most of the little they have, not whining, but glorying in their freedom and Independence and knowing it is the greatest country of them all. I hope in 19S0 I can once again be a "nose-counter-upper." LIGHTNING BOLT SCORES DOUBLE PLAY ON FARM Marietta, Ohio, June 28. (JP) A bolt of lightning shot into Mrs. Pete Silvus' kitchen, I knocked a skillet from her j hand. Jumped to a nearby field ; and knocked a pitchfork from her husband's grasp. The husband escaped injury, but Mrs. Silvus was burned severely. I Freight Cut Balked Washington. June 28. (?"! The interstate commerce com mission refused today to permit (our railroads to make reduc tions of five to 37 cents per! hundred pounds in freight rates on mixed carload shipments of merchandise between Seattle and Tacoma.
