reported to have massed great
swarm of planes, troops and
tank ready to pour across Ru
mania's northern frontier at the
zero hour.
A general re-alignment In the
Balkans appeared under way as
Hungary and Bulgaria eyed
Rumania's impending capitula
tion to the Kremlin and recalled
old territorial claims against
Carol's kingdom.
Hungary claims the province
of Transylvania, once a part of
the now defunct Austro-Hungar-ian
empire. Bulgaria wants the
Dobruja region in southeast Ru
mania, bordered by the Danube
river and the Black sea.
Budapest reported that Pre
mier Telekl has received a let
ter from Adolf Hitler saying
Hungary's claims "will be met."
Rumania has an active army
estimated at 800.000 men and
approximately 1,000,000 trained
reserves.
Italy Wants Part
Meanwhile, as more English
spokesmen hinted at plans for
a British offensive against the
axis powers, authoritative
sources in Rome said Italian
troops, planes and warships may
take part in the projected Ger
man attack on the British Isles,
emulating the exploit of Caes
ar's Roman Legions nearly 2,000
years ago.
Authoritative reports said
Germany and Italy consented to
the Soviet demand on Rumania
in a "dear' to pay for Russia's
pressure to keep Turkey from
Joining the allies and for Soviet
economic aid to the axis pow
ers.
Russian planes bombed vil
lages in Rumania's eastern pro
vince of Bessarabia, dispatches
said, and one Soviet plane was
snot down.
British Bomb Ruhr
In the main European strug
gle, British bombers inflicted
"very heavy attacks" on Ger
many's rich industrial region of
the Ruhr, London reported.
Indications mounted that at
I least some of France's warf leet,
j flouting armistice provisions for
I surrender had cast its lot with
' Great Britain and pledged
i fight to the finish from North
African bases.
I Spanish sources and British
reports . from Gibraltar said
! French west Mediterranean na-
val squadrons had sped past
Gibraltar to Casablanca, stra
tegic Atlantic port of French
; Morrocco.
I French warships In the east
'ern Mediterranean last were re-
i ported remaining with the Brit
ish fleet at Alexandria.
One Berlin radio comments-
: tor, meanwhile, said the Brit
1 ish government was trying to
; contact the axis powers, pre'
sumably for peace negotions,
but London officials said the re
port was "positively rubbish.1
: For the sixth time In nine
days, wide-ranging German
I bombers swept over England
, from the southeast coast to
northern Scotland. The air min
istry said two of the raiders
were shot down, and that no
serious damage an d "only
slight" casualties were caused.
SEN. TAFT SECOND
IS
IN OPENING TEST
am keeping out of the nomina
tion fight.'
Two ballots were scheduled
before nightfall. Then if no
nomination wer. made, th. con
vention would recess until to
night. Between times, the lead
ers could survey the situation.
Word had come from the va
rious candidates that they had
gained the Impression Hoover
would be willing to let his name
stay In the race for the nomina
tion If early ballot strength de
veloped for him.
Only that balloting can deter
mine the strength of the former
president, whose name was not
formally placed before the con
vention, and disclose how far
Wendell Willkie has pierced the
delegate defenses of Senator
(Continued from rm One.)
nomination today in the Repub
lican national convention.
The noisy convention atmos
phere was quieted somewhat by
tenseness as balloting time ar
rived. All the oratory had been
cleared away when delegates
streamed onto the floor for the
afternoon session.
Last minute reports of shifts
of strength flew thick and fast
among the delegates. There was
word that Herbert Hoover would
run if the party wanted him
coupled with the actual opening
of a draft Hoover headquar
ters In a downtown hotel.
McNarr Denies
There also was an excited ru
mor that Senator Chsrles L. Mc
Nary, Oregon's favorite son. had
agreed to throw his support to
Taft, but In a telephone call
from Washington, McNary said:
"I told my friends to support
any candidate they choose. I
Robert A. Taft of Ohio, Senator
Arthur H. Vandenberg of Michi
gan and Thomas E. Dewey of
New York.
Tea Offered
Hoover himself, busy with
fresh conferences at his hotel,
did not amplify his previous
statement that he was not "seek
ing" public office again. But
some party leaders gained the
Impression that he not only
wanted to stop Willkie, but also
would accept the nomination
himself If the opportunity arose
The names of ten candidates
had been put into the conven
tion nominating pot.
The first few ballots were ex
pected to tell whether other can
didates, with the apparent sup
port of Hoover, had been able
to nail down their delegations)
tightly enough to withstand the
push of the hard hitting Wlllkla.
Salem (U.R) A decline of 49
In the total of farms in Marion
county since 1935 was reported
