Resting Miss Alice Hanley, pioneer and widely-known resi dent of the Jacksonville area, who suffered a slight stroke last Saturday, was resting sat isfactorily today, friends re ported. To Exposition H. C. Obye, assistant supervisor of the Rogue River national forest, and Mrs. Obye left by stage last night to spend a few days at the Golden Gate international exposition at San Francisco. They planned to return Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Cordy Sun derman, who have been vaca tioning in the south. Mr. Sun derman is landscape architect of Rogue River national forest . Opens Store L. J. Holbrook announced today that he will open a new furniture store at 18 North Front street Satur day. The store will be known as Holbrook Furniture. Burn- ham arrived from Oakland, Cal., last night and L. S. White left on the same plane for Portland. C. T. E TO START JULY 1 Another period of enrollment of youths in the civilian conser vation corps will begin July 1 and continue through July 31. Eligible youths desiring to en roll should apply immediately to the Jackson county public weliare commission in Medford city hall, CCC headquarters csirl. The auota for Jackson county is 34 enrollees. Up to this aft ernoon only 17 had registered with the welfare commission. The enrollment requirements have been eased so as lo permit acceptance of young men who nreviouslv had been excluded because their parents were not in financial neea, uv-i; neaa quarters stated. Now any unemployed, un married male citizen of the United States 17 to 23 years of age is eligible for enrollment. MODJESKI, FAMOUS AS BRIDGE ENGINEER, DIES Los Angeles. June 27. (TV Ralph Modjeski, 79, famous as a bridge engineer, died at his home here yesterday. Chairman of the board of con sulting engineers for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridge. Modjeski also was designer of many other famous structures. including the trans-Mississippi bridge at New Orleans, the mid Hudson bridge at Poughkeepsie. N. Y., the Delaware river bridge in Philadelphia and the Colum bia river bridge at Celilo, Ore. FAMI .P. FIRE PERMITS AT ASHLAND OFFICE Rogue River national forest headquarters today announced the renting of rooms for a fire guard in the Stearns building near the plaza at Ashland. At this office the public may obtain campfire permits and in formation regarding travel and recreational facilities in the for est areas. Carl Ehelebe has been em ployed for the Ashland post. In addition to his office work, he will protect the Ashland water shed against fire. Mr. Ehelebe has been employed for three years as recreation guard at Union Creek. Iff) Secretary of State Earl Snell condemned hatred, greed and persecution motivating the Eu ropean war today in the 25th state Eagles' convention keynote speech. "The situation is serious and more or less of an emergency faces this country of ours," Snell said. "If we had awakened years ago we would not now have the war Jitters." New Zealand Plant Income Tax Boost Wellington, New Zealand, June 27. (P) A budget calling for the expenditure of 37,300 000 pounds (about $83,250,000) for war purposes during the 1940-41 fiscal year and provid ing increased income taxes was presented to the house of rep resentatives today by Prime Minister Walter Nash. The budget levied an income tax of 12a percent per pound for the first 100 pounds of tax able Income instead of 10 per cent, the present rate. It will increase to 60 percent of each pound for Incomes above 3,800 pounds (about $11,500). U. S. ARMY PLANES TO VISIT SOUTH CAPITALS Panama. June 27. IPh An unspecified number of U. S. army planes will take off at dawn tomorrow on a trip to cen tral American capitals. They are to return July 2. Official sources said it was "routine training." BRIDGES RELEASES VOTES 10 WILLKIE Philadelphia, June 27. &) Senator Styles Bridges of New Hampshire, at the close of the second ballot at the Republican convention today, released his delegates and urged them to vote for Wendell Willkie. Bridges, in a statement, de clared he believed Willkie "can win and pull this country back from the precipice." Bridges action aroused Im mediate speculation as to wheth er he might receive Willkie backing for vice president in event of the New Yorker's nom ination for the presidency. Neither man had any com ment on this speculation.
