Barker Long Beach, Calif., June 20. tiPt Over a modern "Oregon Trail." the main body of a group of colonists leaves today for the f north to wrest homes from Vir gin land. Twenty-five or thirty families will depart for a 680-acre tract near Grants Pass, Ore., where several families already have preceded them, R. J. Wilson president of the Pioneers' club said today. In their automobiles they will carry bedding and cooking uten sils. Their household effects will be taken later in five trucks the colony is operating between here and its new settlement. 12$ Families Included Unlike the wagon trains that operated over the historic Ore gon trail across prairies and mountains a century ago, the new colonists will not travel as a party. "Each car will have to fight its own traffic," said Wilson "We can't take them through the cities as a caravan." By the middle of July. 125 ' families in all will have left for T the Oregon settlement, where log cabins already are being built and crops planted by the advance parties. A sawmill four miles away is to be moved to the site to provide lumber for houses. Wilson said. In addition to the 680 acres purchased as the site for the co operative colony, 340 acres of timber land have been bought. Wilson said thousands of acres more have been offered, but the colonists will make sure of its value before buying any of it. Fire Acres Each The timbering, he explained, is only to provide a "grub stake. As soon as the main tract is under cultivation, each head of a family will be given five acres of farming land and a house, in return for the $25 paid into the colony treasury for its purchase. Many of the colonists, Wilson said, are experienced farmers But they also include engineers and artisans of various crafts who will be able to establish and operate the projected com munity. Just about the same sort of cross section of society, it was suggested, as plodded along be side the lumbering ox teams from Missouri to Oregon a hun dred years ago.
