churches, reduced indebtedness
and expanded membership In
the past 12 months, the Rev.
H. S. Shellhart of Corvallis told
the denomination's general state
conference last night
The Rev. Shellhart, conference
statistician, explained that the
addition of new churches was
due primarily to the recent
merger of the Methodist Eplsco-
pal and the Methodist Episcopal
South churches and the "general
deepening of spiritual feeling."

since 1939 and also since 1930.
A. R. McCall, supervisor for the
census for the Salem district,
reported today.
There are 4,731 farms In
Marion county compared with
9,181 in 1939 and 4.821 in 1930.
There are 1,790 farms in Polk
county, while there were 1,966
in 1939 and 1,883 In 1930.
McCall said he is uncertain
as to the exact causa of the
decrease, but he said he thought
merchanlzed farming was large
ly responsible.
