Waley, kidnaper of George Weyerhaeuser, Tacoma lumber family heir, lost his ha beas corpus plea In the federal circuit court of appeals yester day. As a result, the Alcatraz convict must remain in prison to serve his life term. Waley contended that his con viction under the so-called Lind bergh law was invalid because he did not cross a state line during the commission of the crime. Beck, school custodian, has refinished and revarnished the floors in the high school and next week will begin sum mer maintenance work In the grade school building. J. John son will re-calsomine and paint the wood trim in the element ary building. Mrs. Lucy Young conducts daily art classes in the grade school building, with an atten dance of 10 to 25 per day. Work consists of basket weav ing, clay modeling, and wood working. Sponsored by the school and financed by the Works Progress Administration, the classes open at 9 a.m. and cloe at 3:30 p.m. Walter V. Dennis, superin tendent of schools here, will leave June 17 for Eugene, to work on an advanced degree in education at University of Ore gon. Work pertaining to organ-1 ization. final records, etc., has been completed and the school is in readiness for classes next fall. i Carl Magerle delivered 150 cords of wood on contract to the school district recently. The wood was cut by Harry nd Carroll Randleman. About 123 library and text books have been repaired for another year of service in the school library. Miss Elsie Witchen. acting ex ecutive secretary of th Oregon Tuberculosis association who is now attending the national meet ing in Cleveland, will be a guest in the Rogue River valley next Thursday. A meeting of the executive board of the Jackson County Public Health association has been called in her honor, Mrs. J. C. S. Weills. president, an nounced today. Miss Witchen will coma to Medford directly from Klamath Falls and will continue to Grants Pass the same day. Annual report for the associa tion year 1939-40. released by the executive board of the health association, reads as follows: The executive board reports that during the past year it has conducted: 1. Eleven monthly board meetings, with a 96 per cent at tendance. I 2. Five general meetings, for the full county membership with a business session, address by guest speaker, tea served, once each by a committee from Cen tral Point, Jacksonville, Phoe nix, Talent. The annual lunch eon is given under auspices of Ashland and Medford. 3. Sent a delegate to the Na tional Tuberculosis association annual meeting, Boston. 4. Sent 14 delegates to Ore gon's annual meeting at Bend. 5. Held a regional Christmas seal conference in Medford. 6. Helped the rehabilitation of three patients, dismissed from tuberculosis institutions. 7. Financed 232 tuberculosis X-rays. 8. Supplied nearly 2000 quarts of milk to tuberculosis suspects. 9. At the meeting held at the Boy Scout office each troop committeeman reported upon the numbers of boys from hia troop that planned to attend camp and further plans were laid for additional regis trations. Special attention was given to means of providing total or par tial free campships for boys un able to finance entire cost of a week in camp. Smith revealed that a small fund is now avail able for this purpose and urged those present to take every pos sible step to enlarge the fund.
